I'm not sure what to do, my guinea pig had her babies yesterday, she had 4, all seem to be fine but one doesnt have any eyes, it seems to just sit in one place so i dont know if its feeding from mum or not, I'm concerned it will be rejected. The sows last litter was of 4 and 1 of them died after about a week. anyone else had any experience of a blind piggy, any advice would be greatly recieved.

many thanks

Hi, thanks for posting the link it was very helpful, i guess only time will tell but the outcome looks a bit grim!

really sorry to hear about your baby. Are the others all OK? How's mum wiith the rest?

Is the baby white?

I know some people have had blind piggies born that have gone on to live happy lives - sometimes short, but happy. Check the teeth and see if these are formed normally (compare to one of the other bubs). This will make the most difference as to whether they will have a quality of life or not. You might need to give the baby time alone with mum - can you hold the mum on your lap and let her feed just this baby by itself?

Mum is dark brown as is dad but with ginger patches, baby is same as mum. i think mum and dad could also be brother and sister therefore deformities can be expected. gonna get mum and baby out together tomorrow for some time alone and to see if baby is feeding ok.

I agree with Louise, my first thought was lethal. Perhaps a genetic deformity as a result of in-breeding, but most of the cases I'm aware of where a pig was born without eyes were lethals. Some live very short lives, others - with a lot of TLC and specialist care - have lived 3 years plus.

Edit:: Just seen your last post. I'd certainly be inclined to suspect this problem is due to in-breeding.

yes i think your right, ive been reading a few articles where people have looked after their guinea pig in a similar situation and although i would definately give it lots of tlc it sounds like the problems they have cause the piggys alot of pain and discomfort even with lots of medical help, i certainly dont want it suffer. :...

You can only do what is right for the little guy, you know him best. If his only problem is his eyes, he may learn to live with the disability, but if his genetic makeup has led to this, I would be wondering if it could lead to anything else. Keep us updated on him, wishing you the best.

No eyed piggy doin ok

Just an update on no eyes, he seems to be doing really well, he is feeding from mum and eating both dried food and veg and is growing the same rate as the others. i checked his teeth which seem normal. As he has grown i can see the eye area better and they look like they are just fused together, I'm wondering if there could be an eye behind it and could they be opened?

Excellent news, thank you for the update. Really not sure about whether there could be eyes, I'd be reluctant to request for the eyelids to be opened up unless proof can be found beforehand about whether there are any eyes there - sorry not to be of more use with that.

Has 'no eyes' got a name?

Hi, not sure on a name yet, ive gotta find out what sex it is first, any suggestions from anyone most welcome.

Poor piggie!

Great to hear that he seems to be thriving, hope he continues to do ok.

So sorry to hear you've got a poorly little one. Wishing you and him/her all the luck in the world for a long, happy time together.

thanks so much for the update i was wondering how he was getting on -

lovely photo he looks healthy enough well done you for not giving up on him!

love the colour too!

Phoenix is a lovely name for a very pretty piggy.

Good for not giving up on him! I had a cataract piggy once, and she got on fine - roamed the garden and followed my voice and even jumped on top of the hut to wheek for more food! Sight is thankfully not the most important sense, and he'll compensate well with is whiskers and his his nose!

Still a cutie! Phoenix is very fitting! You've done a great job with the little one.

I think Phoenix is a great name with excellent symbolism. I do hope he can live up to that and enjoy a full life and be a happy piggy. he is very pretty indeed.

Good luck to you both!x>>

He's super, and looks very fit and healthy, with lovely shiny fur. Well done on getting him this far.
