Well if you have been reading you know I was trying to figure out how to have 2 piggies for 2 boys, Now I have fixed that problem.
I have 2 piggies and seperate cages for each boy. but they are coming from 2 different people so, Can the 4 piggies play together? or when cages are being cleaned be put in one cage for a while? Thanks
 
Are they all boars? You do have to be careful over the dominant issue. I have tried putting my 2 in a cage while cleaning and it doesn't work, the smaller space means they fight for dominance and I feel putting four boars together may end up with them falling out. It can work and yeah, give it a try but watch carefully things can turn sour very quickly.

We will be having 4 females Sows I think is what you call them. So would I need to worry about the fighting still? and what about Quarantine? since they are not from the same place? Thanks
 
Not as much but girls can be dominant especially when in heat which is around every 17 days. Mine go mad when on heat! I would quarantine if they aren't from the same place couple of weeks to three weeks should be fine. :)
 
Ok great thanks, what do I need to watch for when in Quarentine? And are there any physical signs when they are in heat?
 
Well I would think it was just general illness is quarentine and mites. Scratching a lot, not eating etc etc.

As for the heat, mine squeak like mad at one another and rumble sometimes, you will know when they are in heat. Boys are territorial girls are hormonal...lol Just like us! :D
 
I agree with Louise 4 girls should be fine with floortime together etc and i made the mistake of not doing quarantine with one of mine and she had mites, lookly i spotted it early and seperated her, she went vets with the other two and the other two were treated before they showed any signs, phew. so quarantine is best to be on the safe side :)
 
how can you tell they have mites? The 2 I looked at today looked ok, they are in an apartment with a college student and she doesnt have the time to care for them anymore so she is letting me have them and the cage.
 
they scratch themselves and will loose some hair around that area, they could also be put off food, that harder to tell when you have new piggies because you dont know how much they normally eat and they could not be eating enough as they've moved home so could be stressed :)

you should be ok though, theres lots of pics on the forum of piggies with mites etc. :)
 
Great Thanks again. so how do they get the mites and how do you prevent them from getting them if they have had them?
 
well Cookie (my third and final piggie) had mites when she came home with me but they kicked in as she got stressed with moving and meeting new piggies, leaving old piggies behind etc
i asked Karen ways to help prevent mites, i hope she doesnt mind me saying but she said making sure they dont have damp hay in the cage etc
i dont think you can prevent them but mine have hay in their hay rack and play in shredded paper instead :)
 
Make sure that you don't bring damp hay into the cage as parasites can live on it for a short while. Most guineas carry mites, they 'kick in' when guinea is under stress- such as being introduced to a new situation/pregnancy/illness.

Re Sows, it depends on the individual. I've had some nasty scenes with sows here, you just need to try them. Find out what works for them and you :)
 
Great Thanks. they are both going to be rescues so I'm hoping they are in good health. When I looked at them they looked fine so I will be sure to pay attention to every detail when they are here...
 
I have 3 sows together and 2 in another cage. Every day they have floor time together, then go back into their seperate cages after. It works out fine as 4 have laid back personalities. One is a trouble maker but as long as the others can get away from her and she has plenty of distractions it works fine ;) good luck
 
well i have four boars from different families 2 in each cage and they are fine wen they are being cleaned out?
just keep an eye on them.
