I bought a second hand fish tank and cupboard from someone leaving uni 2yrs ago for £25! finally put my 5 goldfish in yesterday! yay!
I've bought more plants and going to set it up properly tomorrow with more gravel and actually plant the plants in the gravel. Bought some new daylight lighting tubes so hopefully the plants will grow.
I went into p@h today with a list of all the names of the plants that I could have in the aquarium, so I could get some for a cold water tank. they must have thought I was mad!

Anyway here are some pictures of the tank so far. hope you like them! :)

Ahh wowie that tanks fabulous and I love your fish x) I've always had a soft spot for fishies, i had two gorgeous fantail tail fish a few years back and a beautiful black moor and i miss them so much they were called Magic, Mushroom and King Julius do yours have names too? Or am i a little barmy for naming my fish? teehee, hmmm i can see me hunting for their tank tomorrow! Lovely piccys and i like the little no fishing sign too :))

hee hee!
The large orange fish in the bottom picture is called Richard Mannings. The other ones did have names in 2nd year but I cant remember them! We call them
the fat silver one, the small orange one and the other two! Richard Mannings is actually a bit famous (in my eyes anyway!). In freshers week some of my friends and I went to see Stevie Star the Regurgitator (he was on Britain's got talent) at the Union. One of his acts was to swallow and regurgitate some gold fish (who were perfectly fine at the end, may I add). At the end of the show he asked if anyone would like the gold fish as it was his last show, and we were given one of the three fish, we carried him back to halls in a plastic pint cup! He lived in our kitchen in halls in a plastic tank until the management found out just before the end of summer term and confiscated him! He was looked after by the maintenance man for a week until I brought him to Wales to live with my other goldfish! He has quite a story to him!
I was trying to convince my parents that we need a shubunkin to round it to a nice even number of 6! Its not working so far....

Looks great, I always had coldwater tanks they are great, easy to look after and the colours of the goldfish are just as lovely as the tropical & marine fish

That looks fabulous! I love fish in a home as they are so relaxing!

Aww wow! So your fish has been inside Stevie Starr?! :))

Indeed he has!
Before the show we were playing pool, and a man walked up to the table (who we found out was stevie starr) took our white ball, swallowed it and walked off! Our jaws hit the ground! He came back and regurgitated it and put it back on the table, and we continued playing!

I have two picture of the final finished tank with gravel and the plants planted. They're uploading onto photobucket right now.

Finished tank! Just hope the plants grow and start the breaking down of nitrates, nitrites and that my good bacteria in the filters start colonising and breaking down the waste material! Never realised how much more there is to keeping fish than water and some goldfish! Everything has to be in such a fine balance for things to run smoothly!

hello! Thought I'd give a bit of an update!

Its been 2 years since moving the fishies in, and they have all practically doubled in size! During this time I've found out that this tank (2ft) was WWWAAAAYYYY too small for 5 fish, but we kept on top of it. Everything was going swimmingly (hee hee) until christmas when Richard went a bit "odd". Hes been suffering from constipation/swim bladder disease for a while, but its not a bad case, he can still swim upright he's just a bit more buoyant! But at christmas he was the opposite, unable to float and lying on the bottom of the tank etc...
So water quality has been fine over the 2 years but Nitrates shot up over christmas. I was doing water changes everyday throughout christmas, adding in lots of plants to help use up the nitrates, made my own little nitrate remover filter etc..

So I have now bought a bigger fish tank for them.....

its rather large! (thats me standing next to it). I think my parents will hit the roof if they find out i have a 5ft tank (they said the 2ft one was too big!), so I just need to keep it hidden from them..... :/

Hoping to set it up in the next few months... will put up a picture when its finished!

:)

That's awesome, so much better for goldfish to have plenty of space, like most of the traditional pet shop pets people don't realise what their requirements are. :)

I know! I was in p@h buying some plants for the fish to destroy and a couple were getting a little goldfish and a little plastic tank. I wanted to knock the tank out of their hands and slap the sales person! lol but at least they wouldn't let them have the fish if they didn't buy a filter...

I think I can fit in the 5 goldfish into 330L, the volume of water recommended for common goldfish varies so much on the internet! Ive read from 60L to 125L per fish! So confusing..

I cant decide what I want my tank set up to be like. Dont know if I should try and plant it, or leave it quite minimal.. If I plant it, the fish will just eat them, but on the other hand the plants can help keep the nitrates lower.. oh what to do!

Theres a lot of stunning tanks on google images

love your fish I have loads of tanks, big one in the front room has 4 lovely fat fish in.....I dont have anything in my tanks apart from a pump, doesnt look great but the fish are big and need the space...

aw thanks!

Any pictures?

I'm loading up some pics of the fish from christmas, then you can see just how big they've got over 2 years!

One has lumpy growths on him now, in 5 different places :( one being on his mouth! :/

Oooh lovely tank and fish! I'm pleased to hear he ended up with a good home!

Goldfish grow MASSIVE, if given the chance in proper conditions (in a pond) and live for years! have a look at this beast! http://news.yahoo.com/video/giant-15-inch-long-goldfish-010036558.html

My last fish was a Wakin who lived for 13yrs, but if it was in a pond it would have been 20yrs+

They dont normally live or grow as much as they should as they are kept in tanks which are too small and too overstocked, and in poor water quality.

I'm only just learning about how much care they need over the past two years, but I've always had goldfish since I was 7 (I'm 23 now). So the fish ive had in the past suffered greatly as they werent kept correctly :( Its a steep learning curve. But hopefully with my new 330L tank they'll be a lot happier!

Its a common mistake, it annoys me petstores and aquariums sell bowls still, biggest myth that goldfish grow to size of a bowl. Your new tank looks great, it should be big enough, have you tried fake plants some of the silk ones look real, i recently brought loads of live plants for my tropical tank and my my betta sulked as i removed his fake plant, had to put it back in :)
