hi everyone....so I'm new to this site and was hoping for some advice....basically long story short my beautiful new guinea pig (7 weeks) has had a bad reaction to mites/ringworm.. he's been to the vet and has been on antibiotics for 3 days now and had 2 treatments last 2 weeks of ivermectin he definitely seems happier in himself but he is still rubbing the sides of his face were his sores are, his backside is healing and seems to be much better...20180204_145014.webp 20180204_145031.webp I'm trying to keep him covered over as much as I can to prevent scratching with his favourite blanket...but my question is if anyone else has else has experienced this before and when should he start healing up or any advice to stop the scratching? he's literally like my baby and it's making me so upset seeing him looking so sore :( I'll upload some picks of his sores.

Hi and welcome to the forum, sorry it's not in better circumstances. Unfortunately it sounds like your vet is not experienced and I would seek a second opinion from a more savvy vet. If your piggy has ringworm then neither of the treatments you have been given will be doing anything to combat the condition. Ringworm needs specific oral or topical treatment and does not respond to ivermectin or antibiotics. Similarly mites do not require an antibiotic so I am unsure why you have been prescribed one as surely it will just allow any infections to become resistant to the antibiotic in the long term.

We have a vet locator on the top bar which, whilst not exhaustive, should help you identify more knowledgeable vets.

Hi and welcome!

Your vet is unfortunately treating for parasitic mange mites and a bacterial skin infection, but the not the fungal one that your guinea pig is exhibiting a classic case of!
Ivermectin will only suppress ringworm temporarily, but does NOT cure it; it will flare up again as soon as you stop the ivermectin. Antibiotics may prevent infection entering any open sores, but does NOT heal ringworm, which is the most aggressive form of fungal skin infection and requires completely different treatment, either orally (the most efficient) or topically via baths/dips. Ringworm is also the most transmittable form of fungal and can be caught from your piggies by humans and other pet species.:(

What your guinea pig urgently needs is good quality fungal treatment! Do you have access to a more piggy savvy vet?

Please take the time to read these guides. If you have not protected yourself, there is now also a good chance that you are incubating ringworm yourself; speak to a pharmacist promptly if you delevop it yourself! Good hygiene and investing in a good vet-strength antifungal disinfectant are crucial.
If you want to continue with your current vet, please copy and print out this information and show him. We have also listed the currently most effective brands of medication in the UK as well as the US. Oral treatment is prescription-only.

PS: If your guinea pig has developed the symptoms within 2 weeks of sale at a pet shop and been seen by a vet promptly, then you can reclaim any vet cost from the shop if you present your vet bills together with the sales receipt since exposure and infection must have happened at the shop or the breeder's.
