I introduced myself last night on the forums and this is only my second post so i hope its in the right place
We got our piggies on sunday 2 males the smooth coated lenny is coming out of his shell now and is wheeking and jumping and is happy to be handled and stroked and chatters quietly most of the time your stroking him and is very happy to investigate your lap and any pockets you have ^)
Derek is the smaller of the two and I'm a bit worried .... he happily lets you pick him up, doesnt struggle or make any noises .. He is so still! ... doesnt move when * hold him in your lap he is like a little statue and just stays there where you put him .......
When you have Lenny and Derek out together lenny will nudge and climb over derek ...
He nudges under his body climbs on top of him nuzzles him and Derek just stays put doesnt move atall .. all he will do now and again is chirp ..
I'm worried somthing might be wrong .. can anyone advice ?
It sounds like Derek is just plain scared - everything is new and it can be very frightening. Are they in an indoor cage? If so the openess can be intimidating - place a towel over the top and they should feel more secure - a few places to hide as well as the bedroom will probably help. Just give them time to settle - some take longer than others.
Hi Suzy thanks for replying so quickly just to answer some of your responces
The cage is an indoor one and they have a bed area which has a roof and has hay and shavings
When i pick him up he is always snuggled up in a fleece ... so i dont just let him out in the open atall i hold him to me all the time Lenny smells him and and trys nudging in and just wont leave him
As I said before it sound like he is just scared - a bit of time and patience should work wonders, once you can get him to eat while on your lap you will get there very quickly.
I would still use a towel over the top of their cage as it will help him settle quicker. When you give them their veggies watch to see which he chooses first, stop giving that one in their cage and save it for when he's on your lap - if he associates you with his favourite veg he will look forward to coming out.
thanks so much ... I know he likes carrot as he was nibblin that from my hand the other evening ....
he hasnt had any today so maybe ill try him with a peice hes laying on my chest wrapped in a fleece at the moment having cuddle time
Sweetcorn - there's a fair bit of sugar in the full sized ones and they can be fattening if fed too often, though I would think the baby ones don't have as much sugar as they not had time to ripen - worth reading the label on that one as I'm not sure.
Try to remember just how tiny their tummies are and feed accordingly - lots of little bits that they keep coming back to your hand for is a quicker way to tame them than a big lump in one go.
