New mommy to Abby...have questions :)

I am a new piggy mommy, to Abby, a tri color Abyssinian that is 2 months old. I got her from a petshop  They had just gotten her on Thurs and I rescued her on Sun. I now realize that I should have gotten 2 instead of just one.  My significant other and I are gone from the house a total of 10 hours a day and I’m sure she is just soo lonely. So I will be getting another…very soon. However I have some questions for the seasoned owners here…lol
1. She is a 2 month old female. I cant handle babies…so obviously I need another female?
2. Does it have to be yound like her, or can it be an adult?
3. I will obviously have to get a bigger cage…as hers is only 29"L X 18"W X 15"H. It has a 2nd floor that is small. How big should I get for 2 piggies.
4. Where should I get one from ?
I am so in love with this little girl, and worry about her being at home alone all of those hours as well as at night. I take her out as soon as I wake up and as soon as I get home and don’t put her back except for her to eat, then get her out til I go to bed. She is making all of the wonderful wheeks and purrs…and seems happy, but I’m sure she is super lonely when mommy is gone.
ANY ideas and suggestions will be taken very seriously.
(OH! I’m in the US, Texas to be exact.)
 
I am partial to Cubes & Coroplast which are grids that would normally be made into shelves and coroplast that you get from a sign shop.

a 2X4 is suitable for 2 piggies (or a 3X3, which I have). Looks like this:

Tricolour abys are one of my favourite breed! It's good that you are getting her a companion.

To answer your questions:

1) & 2) You can pair her with either a sow of any age or a neutered male of any age.

3) the recommended minimum size is 2 x4 ft ground floor for two guinea pigs, especially those that have not any extra run. You can order online; though I'm not sure which shops deliver to the US. Best pm lindsecm where she's got her set-up from; she's American.

4) If you can, please get another piggie from a rescue. Have you got an animal protection league that could provide you with addresses?
It might be useful to contact a rescue and ask them for their requirements in terms of housing first.


Unless you get a piggie from a reputable rescue, please check the sex; it might save you a lot of hassle http://www.guinealynx.info/sexing.html

If you get another girl, please don't panic if there is some hanky panky going on at about every two weeks per girl. It is part of the dominance thing.

So... 1, 2 and 4) are there any local rescues? you could take her to see which friend she would like. Older would work too. I dont have sows, just boars but I have successfully bonded both 2 young (although they are hitting the trouble months 5-7 now!) and a baby with an older boy.

and 3.. for 2, minimum requirements is 4ft x 2ft.. obviously bigger is better but some of mine are in that size and are fine. Mine also get a lot of playtime and outside time also... a run or a room they can run free and you will see another side to them! Its so fun to watch!

oh goodness yes you should get her a friend, female of course OR castrated male.... girls are quite easy to bond, just put them somewhere nuteral to introduce
and they will soon be friends....

I would go to a rescue and get her a girlfriend, * can take her and let her choose!
I would get same age just so they live out their lives together, age not that important with girls...

thanks everyone...i put up an album last night of Abby. I'll be taking more soon...she's so tiny right now!
