Hello,

My vet is currently not responding so I figured I'd post here & see if anyone else knew any good information.

I have a 7 month old guinea pig that gave birth two nights ago. She is active, eating, drinking, nursing, everything that seems like a good sign! She is getting super excited to get her veggies + hay, popcorning, and she's being such a good first-time mother.

Her stool is soft right now - which I hear is so the babies can eat it and gain nutrients from it - and when I checked on her this morning, her cage smells like baby poop. Not too bad, but noticeable compared to the lack of odor that is normally present.

And I gently lifted her to find her lower belly looking a bit dirty. There's nothing stuck to her, and her fur is white, so that's probably why it's so noticeable. I do notice her cleaning herself and the babies so should I worry about her being a little dirty?

She does have some solid poops littered around the cage too, if that means anything.

Please have her vet checked as soon as possible in case it is the start of pyometra (infection of womb lining) or a mild tummy upset, especially if you are overfeeding veg. I must say that I have never noticed particularly soft and especially no smelly poos with any pregnancies births I have been confronted with.
