Hi today I went to collect three male pigs (a dad and two sons) from a lady in preston who wanted to find them a new home

They seem of a good size and are eating and chattering away. However they are a bit rumbly with each other this may be that they have been in the box and need some time apart.

My question is should i keep them in a seperate room to my girlies and is there anythng specific I should do with them to quarentine, check they are ok?

Thanks

Hi

Yes I would definitely quarantine for a good couple of weeks or so just to protect your other pigs... some things can be contagious and it's not worth the risk. This means a separate room, and feed the new boys last, clean them last etc. so you're not passing anything on. I keep a little bottle of that alchohol hand rub stuff in the quarantine area and just rub it on my hands after.

3 is not a good number for boars generally - how old are the littl'uns? The two sons might make a pair but I'm not sure Dad should stay with them.

Are you intending to keep them or rehome them?

They may also fall out if they can smell your girls so be careful that they don't smell them on your clothes and hands too!

Good luck

Sophie

Aww good luck with them.

I would also suggest getting a vet to check them out because of their teeth and in case of mites etc.

The lady seemed to think the dad is a year and the sons 7 months. I havent really decided yet on the rehome or keep scenrio. The head says make sure they are fine, find the right pairing and rehome. But heart says aww look at the cuties. I may look at get dad neutuered if he isnt too old let him live with my girls as he is similar age and then pair off the sons.

Thanks for the quarentine advice, I shall set them up in spare room and get the hand spray out

Were they living as a trio before you had them? If so I'm surprised they haven't fallen out sooner! Change of territory can spark it off too, so provide them with 3 bowls, 3 of everything so that they don't fight over food etc.

Good luck with them

Yes apparently all lived happily before together but you never really know do you. Ive made them a 4x4 cage and have different houses and food bowls for them so ive left them as a trio and then will monitor whether dad needs coming out

Thanks for your help Sophie

Well done for taking them in, I hope it all works out ok.

I've got 3 boars living together at the moment but it's the first time I've ever had 3 that would!

Look forward to pics of your new arrivals

hiya, good luck with your three new piggies and sorry for kinda hijacking your thread but .... I have a boar who is 18 months old and he lives alone, he's happy enough and very tame, loves coming out to play or just chill out with us and gets on very well with our doggy! is it too late to introduce a playmate for him? would it achieve anything by doing so? (i.e cos he's happy as he is) would i have to introduce them slowly and monitor it? x
