I picked up two girls from a rescue yesterday. They are outside in a hutch-run combi but i've kept them locked upstairs while they settle. They are understandibly skitish but eating and drinking. They dont seem to have had the best start in life.

They both have a few small scabby patches (look old and healing) and are a bit dusty so I have brought some gorgeous guineas shampoo and melts to help sooth them. I'm now thinking that a bath will terrify them...any tips? Or should I wait a while? I have them both booked into the vets next week for a check over, and to make sure the dry skin isn't anything fungal etc. The rescue treated them for mites before I got them apparently. Just want to do good by these poor little ones!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I would not give them baths now as they have yet to settle. Which rescue did you go to? No rescue should allow guinea pigs for rehome until they are healthy. It is good you are going to get them checked out by a vet.

I was given the number by a friend, its a lady on a farm near me who took in a couple of unwanted guineas 10yrs ago and now gets all sorts left at her house. These girls were left in a box with the older (pregnant) sow. She has lots there and was a bit ramshackled, but all the cages looked clean and they all had greens and hay. She given them a spot treatment for mites but said the patches/scabs were probably from the older sow and through stress. She'd had them 4weeks, which was her pregnancy check, and said they had come on well in that time.She said if they didn't improve then I was to bring them back to her.

I always take new pets to the vets for a check up, regardless on how well they look (or not!). Live in a new area now so first time at this vets. Fingers crossed they are okay. They have a small pets vet and are charging £24 for a consultation.

Congrats on your girls. Good idea just to get them checked over. Here is a link to a sticky thread on settling new piggies https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/faq-how-do-i-settle-shy-new-guinea-pigs.36239/

I wouldn't bathe them just vet until you know the condition of there skin. I am surprised they were let go while still having scabs. The vet will be able to tell you if they are still with fungal or still have mites and advise you on best how to treat. they have landed on their paws with you, you sound very caring - lucky piggies. What are their names?

Where do you live? just a rough location, we can see if there is a recommended piggy vet near you on vet locator at top of page.

It's hard naming piggies that are still hiding but at the moment they are Parsley and Sage. They are both Abyssinian, Parsley is black with the occasional orange streak and Sage is a browny red dutch with an orange bum! Once they are settled i'll upload some pictures. I live near Peterborough.

I have a little courtyard garden about 10ft square enclosed all around with paving slabs. I've spent the day clearing any plants I dont know to be safe, hoping that eventually they can have the whole space to run around when i'm home, with there hutch/run for when i'm at work. By the end of the day Sage came out to eat whilst keeping a close eye on me and running away when I stood but Parsley has stayed in her box. Have left them to it apart from changing water and food. They are surrogate children so will be spoilt when I can get near them to do so!

Congratulations on your new additions.Is the yard predator proof? Their are birds that can hurt them as well so they would be safer in an enclosed runs.

Theres a pergola type roof so I don't think any birds of prey would come in but cats might. I study from home out there so they would only free range with supervision.

This is Parsley. She had the biggest bald patch /scab which with some Gorgeous Guineas Kwench is clearing up wonderfully. She was the most nervous at first but as you can see, she isn't too nervous to nibble some carrot on my knee!20140316_075410.webp

This is Sage. She was the braver of the two and is steadily becoming more vocal :) They are seeing the vet on Weds but both look alot better than when they arrived. Dandruff/dust nearly all gone and scabby bits not so dry and flakey. Modifying the ramp on their hutch and will let them explore downstairs tomorrow. On the next warm day I shall try bathing them (and make them hate me all over again no doubt!)20140316_075801.webp

:wel:to the forum..

Your girls are gorgeous ....:love::drool:

I had a lovely 10mins with Sage on my lap stroking her earlier....has made my day!:yahoo:

I've been thinking....the 'rescue' said they had kept the girls for 4weeks as a pregnancy check..was that long enough? Just seen another rescue say that they keep them 10weeks! I only ask as i'm using some gorgeous guinea products that say not to use on pregnant sows. Always assumed mine couldn't be but now i'm not so sure!
