Well since loosing Jake i've been in contact with North East Guinea Pig Rescue. I have my eye on three of their boars as a potential husband to Bella and Esme. There is the gorgeous Bernard who is beautiful but maybe not what i'm looking for temprement wise. Also Gladiator who is also beautiful and borderline temprement wise. The main player so far is Hugo. He is two and apparently very friendly which is exactly what i'm looking for. He is also very handsome. I will hopefully meet them sometime in the next week or so and see if any of them make me fall in love. You usually know once you meet them don't you. I then have to get a bigger indoor cage and have a homecheck. Knowing me I will probably go for the shyest pig as i'll be worried no one will rehome them rolleyes I'm such a sucker for a hard luck story.

Anyone adopted form there before? Any idea what I can expect?

I can't answer your questions but good luck. I hope you find the perfect husband for your girls :)

I know Layla only through the forum, but a home check is usually just done to see whether your set up is big enough and your existing guinea pigs are well cared for. She will also look out for how any other pets (cats, dogs, rats) are kept safely out of reach from the piggies.

Rescuing piggies from bad situations, you do not want them to end up in a similar place again, do you? Unless your house looks like a hovel with a back yard filled with junk, you do not have to fear anything.

I am sure that you will find the piggy that melts your heart - even if it may not be the one you're expecting to!

Best of luck!

Meeting the boys on Thursday night. I'm soo excited. Have to just make sure I only choose one! and stay away from the girls :x

Even then as long as the guinea pigs live in luxury ... :))

(I am going to tidy up):red

I have adopted 4 piggies from Layla. I intended to only adopt 2 as company for my piggie Athena when we lost Cleo but I fell in love with another 2 piggies so a week or so later went back and adopted those. It's very difficult only to take one ( hence why I ended up with 4! ) Something to bare in mind is although the rescues do an absolutely fantastic job in taking care of the piggies they have in, it's only once they're home and in their new environment that their true personalities start coming out. When we got Sookie she attacked our existing 3 girls and was so shy and timid, now she's very adventurous and comes out of her cage when shes hungry to squeek at us to feed her and has turned out to be one of the undersows. Through regular handling and lots of cuddles all of the adopted piggies are now friendly and relaxed. Sam was found as a stray and was extremely skittish when we first got him, and although he is a wimp he's settled down alot so I wouldn't automatically dismiss any of them as over time they will settle and become friendlier if you put the time into them.

Layla is lovely and I'm sure she'll find you the perfect piggie. I didn't have a homecheck as she had car problems at the time so I sent over photos of the set up I had with the dimensions and told her what they would be fed, bedded on etc and she was happy enough to let me adopt based on that. I've always said she's welcome to come and visit at any time and obviously I post plenty of pics up on here with their latest shenanigans so she can keep track of how they're doing.

You have nothing to worry about - home checks are all very informal, all I like to see is the cage/hutch, run/play pen and the bedding and food you use. And also to answer any questions you have. It is just to get a feel that potential adopters care and are interested and dedicated to their animals. Usually if you know who you would like to try with your girls I can also bring the piggy to try potential bondings whilst I am there.

(Oww Gems you slipped through my net! :)))

You will see when you come to my house what a chaotic place it is so I am not worried about how clean and tidy your house is or anything like that.

I have always found homechecks a delightful excuse to share a cuppa with someone as animal daft as I am!

yeh thats what i was hoping for a cuppa and chat with somone whos actually interested in my animals and doesn't think i'm a weirdo! Lol

I picked Gladiator and not just for myself honest! He is very sweet and calm and I think my girls will appreciate a mellow kind of guy like him.

I'm opting for adapting two cages and joining them with a tube of some sorts. I'll be having a look through the plumbing section of the DIY shop for a suitable tunnel. Since OH has agreed to the cage adaptions i'm getting a bit carried away and now want another tunnel leading to an ELC ball pit as well (with the option to block it off when its bed time) OH was asking where we were going to sit after the fantastical cage was made....... I duno :p :))

Yay for getting a new piggie!

Our piggies cage has taken up a hefty chunk of our living room, plus we have throws out for them on the floor when they have floor time so they pretty much have the run of downstairs rolleyes Then we have the two boys in the front bedroom so can't even get to the upstairs computer because of them... just as well Steven is understanding!

How big a tube would it need to be? Have you had a look at chubes to see if they would work? Can't wait to see the finished cage :))

I'm not sure yet. We'll be sorting it all out this weekend. I'll do all the shopping then the OH will do all the actual work and figure out how it will all fit together. I just buy the bits and tell him what I want. :))

My local independent carpet shop gave me loads of free cardboard tubes to cut up for the guinea pigs this week. He also gave me a plastic tube which sounds like it would be ideal for what you want, so may be worth you seeing if you can get a freebie (the shop just puts them in the skip so were glad to pass them on for something useful). :)

Carpet shops are best, they have huge tubes which are ideal!:)

I'm looking for something that curves round so the cages can be in a corner.

You can get a 90 degree turn sewer pipe from somewhere like Wickes. You could extend it with extra straight sewer pipe if necessary but you would lose space in the coner. It may be better to make a hole in the side of one and the front of the other and join them with a very small straight piece.

I had a homecheck on Monday. It was great. At last some piggy mad people who I could tell all about my cage extensions and talk about my guinea pigs without anyone rolling their eyes (and someone to help and advise me about nail clipping etc). The only difficult bit is sending away the extra piggies they bring to try out.

:)) I feel I should make a protest about being called piggy mad, but then it is very true (I can talk piggy for hours rolleyes). Your set up is fabulous and very inventive. :(|)

Oops, sorry :red, it slipped out. I meant it in the nicest possible way.:)) I was just trying to reassure Mrs Ord that it was something to look forward to rather than worry about. I certainly enjoyed it.:)

Well the cage is done. I've used a chube as suggested its was really cheap and easy. The girls are loving the extra space. They are actually lying around and sleeping outside of the hidey holes now which is lovely to see them so relaxed and happy. Just giving Gladiator another week to recover and also Bella could probably do with another week since her spey. The bickering has stopped now as well. Esme was a bit of a bully before but now they seem to be much better friends.

I'm looking forward to the home check now. I met Layla at her house first so I could meet the boys so I wont have the worry of having to send piggies away. Only worry I have is that the girls won't like Gladiator. I think they should though he is very calm the same as my girls. I'll be gutted if it doesn't work out.

I'm looking forward to showing Layla round my zoo. I get so proud of them like a mum with kids. It will be nice to have someone there who actually wants to know about them and doesn't get bored with me going on about my babies :))

Aww I'm sure they'll love gladiator :) And I'm in no doubt he'll like them rolleyes ( expect alot of chasing around and mounting on first introduction! )

Your set up sounds fantastic, looking forward to seeing pics once everythings settled
