Hi
I have 2 guinea pigs Bud & Smokey.
And i am looking for some advise
Bud has either mites or lice losing fur and taking small seizures took him to the vet last tuesday and have been given xeno 450 spot on to use two weeks apart but was wondering if i could use johnsons Insecticidal Shampoo for fleas, mites & lice or would this stop the spot on from working. i am also treating smokey for this as he is itching, moulting & doesn't want anyone touching him.

Yes you'll need to treat both, you cant give a bath for 48 hours after the Xeno 450 is applied but after that you'll be fine, i had a case of this earlier this year and was given stronghold which i had to apply, i was told to give nizoral baths and leave it on to soak for 4 - 5 mins then rinse well and apply sudocream to the affected areas, it worked a realy treat and cleared up very quickly, if they are scratching and biting the area, you can use a bandage to wrap around them to stop them from doing it, obviously dont wrap it too tightly. Hope they are on the mend soon.

Hi and welcome to you, Bud and Smokey to the forum :)
Sorry to hear about Bud having seizures this does happen, just as well you went to your vets! Hope all goes well with the spot on and the baths for both the boys.
If you have anymore concerns pop a thread into the health and illness section, that's where more of our experienced people will see your thread.
Toffeewoffee has done a fab job in helping you.
Hope you can put some pigtures in our stories section at some stage too,

Hi and welcome!

Can you see lice crawling in the fur? Or is it just invisible mites or fungal? Seizures are typical for advanced mites, so you may need at least 3-4 rounds of xeno to clear them.

The insecticidal bath won't work on mites. Please be aware that baths can further irritate already inflamed, painful skin that has been affected by mite eggs burrowing in, so don't bathe unless there is good reason for it, and rather wait until the end to help wash off all the debris then. You can't bathe within 48 hours of topical mites treatment or you'll wash it off before it has had time to spread and get to work on the skin. Make sure that you gently massage the xeno into the skin and not just on the hair.

Even if you have an old large tubigrip bandages or some old socks that you could cut up to make a round bandage, these all work effectively.

You will need to distroy any wooden toys, bridges, tunnels etc too and replace them, although i do think you can soak old ones in a mild bleach solution and rinse thoroughly, i would prefer to replace them to be on the safe side.

Best of luck.
