Hi everyone !
I'm new here, first post.

I recently purchased a c & c cage and a shameful amount of guinea pig accessories 😂😂
I am yet to adopt the guinea pigs, i want to make sure i have the knowledge to care for them properly.
My question is in regard to garage lighting, i am planning on having the guinea pigs in a CAR FREE garage.

Do i need to purchase specific sources of light (lamp etc..) ? Or can i just use the light in the garage?

Hello and welcome to the forum. Its great that you are planning before you get your piggies. I have two piggies who live in my garage. Their cage faces the door so they have natural light. I put the light on if it’s dark when I go in. But never leave the light on all of the time.

Will they get access to natural light at all - if the garage doesn’t have any natural light, is there an outdoor run during the day when you can supervise them?
Using the garage light for you to see them is absolutely fine but it’s also important for them to have some natural light.

My boys live in my shed which has a few windows so has plenty of natural daylight, but there is no electricity in there so no lighting otherwise. Even if there was, a light would only be on when I needed to be in the shed during darkness (I just use a torch now).

Thanks for the reply,

I will be able to have the garage opened with plenty of natural light for some periods of the day, but some says might be less.

If i am not home during the day should i not leave the light on for them ?
Or are they okay to be in darkness ?

Theyll be ok in darkness for some of the time, so you probably won’t need to leave the light on all the time, but they need natural daylight.
@Betsy keeps her piggies in a garage but I think hers has natural daylight. When she sees this, hopefully she can advise more on garage keeping.
As I say, mine are in a shed with windows so have natural daylight all day.

I assume the garage is the only place you can keep them?

Really appreciate the help, looking forward to hearing from @Betsy,

This forum seems great so far, looking forward to learning so much

Sounds like your future piggies will have a fantastic owner!

Hi and welcome to the Forum. I keep my piggies in the garage. There is a large window at one end and I keep the personnel door open all day too. The personnel door is off my Conservatory so no cats or foxes can get in. The main problem with keeping them in the garage is making sure they are warm enough in the winter. Mine live in a hutch so are a bit more protected than a C&C Cage. In the winter mine have loads of hay to snuggle into, snugglesafes, snugglesacks and extra food such as forage sprinkled with Pro-C to help build up their winter reserves. Also my garage is insulated.

@Betsy thanks for the info, I'm pretty sure UK Winters are considerably colder than Sydney, Aus.

In saying that though i will definitely be cautious during the colder months and make sure the piggies have enough warmth.

My main concern is the lighting issue as there are no windows in the garage, ive had some helpful replies in regards to that, I'm sure i’ll be continuously be learning every time I'm reading something in the forum, thanks !
