Lots of rain starting thursday evening through into friday - mainly for the south west/south which is under yellow alert from the met office and yellow alert for flood risk from the Environment Agency.

However this is just the "warm-up" for the main event. Another serious low due to hit on SUNDAY, with gale force winds and heavy rain for most of the country.

It "may" be as bad as the storm on 23/24th December
...but there is still some uncertainty just which areas and how badly they will be affected.

Currently almost the whole country is under a yellow warning for rain this sunday and I'm sure these warnings will be upgraded in some areas as the storm approaches.

Most importantly however will be the risk of flooding particularly to those areas already severely saturated or that have flooded over the last four weeks. This includes roads so plan your travel carefully and do check on monday morning before you travel.

Please ensure you know if you are living in a flood risk area by checking your post code on the Environment Agency web site, both river and surface water flooding maps need to be checked

If you are, please sign up to the flood warning system so you get an alert when flooding may/is about to happen in your area.

Thanks for posting this @Pebble the weather is pretty grim this morning, skidded my car on a rather wet road (my own fault, its a new car to me and its the first time ive driven it on wet roads)

Oh heck no.....I am driving tomorrow. The castles watering hole is already very full, I do wonder what will happen come the weekend/Sunday then.

Just when you thought there couldnt possibly be any more rain up there...

FRI
Rain tomrorow is due to hit the South west/West am and is already affecting Ireland It will be slow moving and will not hit the south east side until possibly after daylight hours. Other areas of the country have a warning for ice

SAT
Possibility of a trough moving through west to east mid pm saturday giving heavy bursts of rain/hail and maybe thunder in some places. Evening should either be very cold wintry showers or dry.

SUN
Sunday is messy and still not firmed up. Heavy rainfall moving west to east hitting Northern Ireland/SW/Wales/ from about lunchtime and being persistent across the south and south east so flood watch/warning may be activated. Rest of the country looks to escape the heavy rain. NB However Somerset on Amber warning for flooding ref Somerset levels.

Winds look to be downgraded - no warnings at present.

You can follow the passage of rain on various sites including this one:

Same here at Falken towers on the other side of the country, almost pitch black outside.

What a fascinating weather event today! A very intense trough or "squall line" moved very swiftly across the country....with in many places thunder, lightning and hail but lasting no longer than say 20-30mins at most. The wind gusts recorded up to 80mph in Bristol, 50mph generally and 75mph at Lydd in Kent. There have been unconfirmed reports of a tornado in Nuneaton, but other reports elsewhere in the country may just be put down to the very squally wind gusts.

Lots of trees down so take care in your journeys tonight.

Main rain event is coming tomorrow.

SUNDAY
Well I said it was messy - and it still is.
There will be gusty winds tonight and ice!

Tomorrow we will see the rain and wind move across the country from Ireland/Wales/south West through to the South east by mid afternoon. Coastal areas may expect 70mph gusts.

It looks like the rain will precede the wind....and Scotland and North of England may also experience some snow on high ground

Best thing to do is look to the Met office warnings for your area, noting the times they are valid for.

also keep an eye on the rain map

and if you are interested, there is a real time wind map here

Stay safe and please do not take unnecessary risks - whilst this is not expected to be as bad as before Xmas - the ground saturation and general weakening of trees/structures , especially after the rip-roaring weather event today, should not be underestimated in terms of potential disruption for rush hour monday morning.....and flooding/trees down etc.

I'm afraid the weather is awful today here is Sheffield. I was going to take some items to my local rescue Centre today but will have to put this on hold. Will have to catch up on my backlog of indoor jobs instead.

I hope everyone is safe and well.

I'm out on patrol in it later on. If the wind and rain at the low level where I live is bad enough, on top of Shap summit on the M6, the wind will be 3 times stronger and the rain will be heavy snow!

Hi Boss
Hope you;re not stuck in a snowdrift .........

Next update: Pulsing and possibly convective (ie lightning/thunder/hail) showers, some intensive, will continue to be around for the next 18hours or so (i.e. wednesday) for most of the country followed by ICE on thursday ....no wind warning.

Friday and saturday sees a new low and more rain/poss convective events with Met Office yellow warning of rain in guess what? Ireland wales/SW/South/SE areas at present.

It's easy to become blase about these warnings - please do not underestimate them. The weather can turn "convective" at any moment given the current unusual conditions - we had two claps of thunder and a torrential downpour tonight here in Pebble country- and this can create a flash flood/wind squall out of nowhere with little warning because it moves so fast....hence the yellows at the moment telling you to be prepared.

The squall line that went through last saturday was forecast - as above - but no-one could predict just how much it would gather intensity and what damage it would cause........serious straight-line-wind/possible tornado damage occurred in Chobham (Surrey), Midhurst (WSussex), Retford (Warks) and Nuneation (Northants) as a result.

A convective "shower" could well tip over a watercourse to cause flooding, given the amount of rain it can chuck out in a short space of time.

I guess by now you are all looking after and securing any outdoor pets/hutches..and ensuring dogs, cats etc are not allowed out to roam when sever weather is forecast. .All I can say additionally is please be careful when out on the roads and do check the weather sites/travel updates before you travel.

This has been the most unusual winter in terms of severe wet and mild weather.....I'd love to say we can expect snow/a drier period next week but unfortunately the Atlantic storm train "keeps on coming"..with the added convective element of strong squally winds/thunderstorms out of nowhere.....please do not lose vigilance.
