My guinea pig, nibbles, has had a lump in his stomache for about 5 months but it hasn't seemed to affect him. The only things I have noticed is that he is getting skinnier but still eating and he has just today making a wierd wheezing sound when i moved him about. I am really worried about him and I am wondering if you can help me with what these things might be, please help!
From a very worried owner x :0

Please tell me you took him to the vet as soon as you saw the lump?

my dad said it wasnt affecting him so we would wait until the lump got bigger and it hasnt but he has got skinnier and is wheezing, i was wondering if you knew what it was?

I'm afraid your guinea pig needs to see a vet. The wheezing noise could be because the lump has grown and perhaps leaning on his lungs, of course it could be unrelated and it could be a URI - either way he needs treatment!

Nibbles definitely needs to see a Vet. His wheezing could be various things, including a respiratory infection. If a respiratory infection is left untreated it can quickly become very serious and develop into Pneumonia, which sadly can (and does) kill guinea pigs. If caught early then antibiotics can be very effective in treating respiratory infections, so it's best to get the Vet's opinion as soon as you can, in case this is Nibbles's problem.

Lumps also always need to be checked out by a Vet, as does rapid/big weight loss. These things could all be unrelated but if not, Nibbles could be more unwell than you think, in which case he really deserves prompt Vet treatment.

Good luck

Your dad is wrong. A lump is a very dangerous sign. Guinea pigs are prone to chesty illnesses and can die from them. He needs to see a vet now. You need to take him to the emergency vet. He will be in a lot of pain.

This is true I'm afraid. It could be putting pressure on his lungs. Lumps should really be seen as soon as they are noticed. It is down to the vet to decide if it is affecting him health wise. I lost a piggie to a respiratory infection, not nice at all, even though he was old and probably not strong enough to fight itm he went downhill very quickly.

Hope you're piggie is ok, please take him to a vet asap. :)

You noticed the lump 5 months ago and it still hasn't seen a vet? I'm shocked your pig has lasted this long without any treatment. I doubt you will as you haven't before but I would get your pig to the vet asap.

I am seriously worried about this guinea pig and cannot get it out of my head. :(

I know. It is awful. Five months of having a lump! The poor little thing.

Slightly off topic but why do parents let their kids have animals if they aren't prepared to take the poor creature to the vets!

Op - do you have a PDSA near you?

Is there a rescue nearby who could help you?

xx

I totally agree with you! Imagine the parents not allowing a sick animal to the vet. It is so cruel and really angers me.

Sadly I think its quite a regular thing. I knew someone whose rabbit was ill so instead of taking it to a vet, her Dad hit it over the head with a spade :(
If my piggies so much as sneeze they are booked into the vet at the first possible oppurtunity, I just don't understand how some people don't seem to care.

That is totally sick and it is murder. I wonder what the rspca would have done to him.

To be honest I doubt they would have done anything. I know alot of people who have reported similar incidents to the RSPCA and they haven't done anything about it. It is truly disgusting that they couldn't be bothered to get treatment or just to PTS.

I could never ever do something so sick and anybody who does really should be punished. :( I am sick of reading on here about really ill animals who need a vet and the person asks for advice to save money. mallethead

I totally agree with you. Luckily I didn't know the person directly, otherwsie I don't know that I would have been able to control myself.

I would have gone round to him. I would not have been able to help it. mallethead

He sounds like a nasty piece of work and would probably have hit me round the head with the spade too If I had of done :(

Am so worried about this pig with the lump, I really don't know how its lasted 5 months. I can't believe they said 'we'll wait for it to get bigger and then go to the vet'! how utterly ridiculous :(

Same here. I keep talking to my boyfriend about it but he does not understand why I am so upset. :(

I hope so too. All night I was checking the forum to see if the owner would say if she would take him to a vets. :( What can we do? I feel helpless.

Sadly we can't do anything. Even if we 'knew' the owner we couldn't force them to go to the vets. If they have left it 5 months then I very much doubt they will go to the vets at all now mallethead

Shame we cannot kidnap the poor thing and take him to a vets. I wonder if we will be in trouble talking about this in public. Oops.:x

To be honest they posted on a public forum about not treating an obviously ill piggie, they should be ashamed of themselves. We are just trying to help, I'm really not bothered what they think of me. 5 months down the line is really too late for them to worry about it, I'd be very surprised if the poor thing can be helped now :(

Oh god you are so right. Poor baby. It is far too easy to get animals. I wish it was harder so people could not ill treat them.

I torture myself by looking on gumtree and seeing the poor unwanted animals. :( I wish I could help them.
