I sadly lost my beautiful Squeaky last week. I got home from work and it was clear that very little had been eaten or drunk during the day, about half what was usually gone in both water and food, which my sweet little Flossie could account for!
I noticed that Squeaky was moving ever so slowly, with her eyes half shut and then, when I went to pick her up, even her fur felt cold. I rushed her up to the vets but they said her heart was slowing and it was time to say goodbye, and they helped her cross the rainbow bridge. She was 7.

Flossie didn't take well to being alone, and by the weekend it was clear I needed to either get her a new mate (a delicate and sometimes drawn out process) or find a rehoming centre for her. I am away one or two nights a week for work at the moment, so it seemed best to opt for the latter. I found a lovely rescue centre, who have lots of piggies, and she formed an almost instant bond with one of their older lady-piggies. The two have now been sharing a hutch without a problem for 3 days. (Under close supervision).

I really miss my piggies though. I have done what is best for them, but seeing the empty cage is still bringing me to tears several times a day. I want to go and get Flossie back, and bring her new mate with her. Do you think that would be an appropriate thing to do, after sending her away. I know the rescue centre advocate rehoming, but can you readopt after giving a piggy away?

Hi and welcome,

I think the loss of a piggy is quite heart breaking and it can affect you, I think it would have been a very hard decision to give up your other piggy and perhaps in hindsight it might not have been the decision for you. I think the rescue would understand that you were struggling with bereavement and would probably like you to take your piggy home along with her new friend...a win/win situation x

Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry for your loss. Huge hugs xx

I am really sorry for your loss :( It is so hard to lose our pets.

I do agree with @Mother Hubbard above and expect the rescue to see your point of view, you after all surrendered her because you thought it was best for them.
Huge hugs

I'm so sorry for your loss. You surrendered her because you thought it was best for her which shows how much you loved her. I would suggest speaking with the rescue.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Yes definitely re adopt her and cage mate, she will love having u back again.

Please speak to the rescue. I'm sure if you have explained what you have said above and are willing to pay an adoption few for both (to cover the costs of them looking after Flossie) that they would not see a problem with this

This is such a sad story I'm also sorry for your loss.
PLEASE GO AND GET THEM trust me it will make you feel alot better plus your saving two pigs from living at a rescue (not saying anything against rescues they are wonderful places) and you can't just leave that cage empty.:agr::))

thank you everyone for your replies and support. I have been in contact with the rescue centre several times. Unfortunately (for me not them), my piggy and her new friend are becoming a trio with another piggy, and are promised elsewhere for rehoming. Can't believe I'll really never see her again.

I had to surrender a pair of guinea pigs to a rescue a while ago. One passed away after a few weeks and the other is still there. I would LOVE to adopt her again but they have a policy of no adoption once you have surrendered a pet, which they told me at the time.

I try to imagine her with her new herd and realise that she is perfectly fine without me ... Can be hard but does get better. At lease Flossie has two friends to be with.

Hope you are ok.

PIGGIES 2.webp I was so lost without my beautiful girls, I adopted these lovely baby girls today, Crystal (Mostly white) and Clover (Mostly black) I was so sad seeing the empty cage every day, so I cleaned it up to put on a sale site, and someone in the next village to mine had just put up a pic of these two saying they needed a forever home. They are 16 weeks old, and are settling in well. They've already gone from scared and shakey to venturing out of their tunnels for food and drink. I had to go out this evening for an hour, and in that time they've eaten all the grass I put in and judging by the trail of droppings, had a good explore round the cage.

It's amazing how much animals can mean, and how they can affect us. I feel so much calmer with them here and am motivated to do stuff again! These gorgeous ones will get a thorough vet check on Friday, and a groom tomorrow. And, of course, lots of cuddles and floor time!

Awww welcome little ones! Absolutely gorgeous and I'm sure Flossie would have wanted you to give more piggies a loving home. I'm glad you've welcomed more into your heart and I hope you keep us updated on them here on the forum. X
