Hi my 10 month old female guinea pig groans when urinating but her urine is normal. Is this normal? My other 2 pigs do not make this noise. Otherwise she seems very healthy.

It could be a urinary tract infection or cystitis in which case you would need antibiotics from the vets. Give plenty of fluids too.

Other possibilities are stones, sludge or inflammation of the bladder known as Interstitial cysitis. These would need further investigation. I think for now though a vet visit is needed and she will most likely be treated for a UTI first of all. Please ask for pain relief too.

What do you mean by groaning is it more of a squeak? Have you found any blood in the urine?

Any discomfort when weeing or pooing is not normal, and needs to be checked out by a vet. Hopefully it'll be something easily sorted :)

It sounds more like groaning to me. No blood but she is a lot slower weeing than the other 10 month old and doesn't go to toilet as often as the other. We haven't heard if she sounds the same in her hutch. We are unable to see if she does the same in the hutch as she often likes to hide. She does the groaning while urinating during time out of the hutch.

Thanks Everyone. We took her to the Vets tonight and she does have cystitis. She has been given a painkiller and antibiotics for 5 days.
