Help! One of my piggies. I can't properly tell which is making this hooting/chuntering sound when they eat. It's not constant and I've only noticed it tonight, they are muching on some hay and every couple of minutes I hear it for arround 30 seconds. From what I can tell everything else is normal, breathing sounds fine, they're eating and moving about as they normally would but I'm worried as I've never noticed the sound before. I'm going to get them into the vet tomorrow but would really appreciate it if anyone knows what it could be or if it's a normal sound.
Thankyou

It may be they’re eating too quickly and have to clear their airway. We always recommend you see a vet if you’re worried. You can mention it at the appointment tomorrow.

Okay thankyou, no noise while eating veg so far this morning so hopfully it's nothing serious but I've got them booked in for the vet this evening just to be safe

Guinea pigs have very narrow airways so eating too fast or having a bit of hay dust caught can cause them to cough or sneeze but it is always worth having any breathing/noise issues checked out to be safe and rule out the start of a respiratory issue.

I would recommend to bring it up at the vets and have the airways and heart checked; it is hopefully nothing serious.

Please be aware that guinea pigs have very narrow airways and can't breathe through their mouths. Any issues, from the most minor obstruction onwards, become usually more audible and noticeable when a piggy is eating.

My piggies do this all the time when they're eating their favorite veg or having a good groom and no vet issues in sight.

Could be they're just enjoying themselves, but I'd keep an eye out for any nasal discharge just in case.

2 healthy piggies, the vet checked hearts, Airways and temperature and all is good. She thinks the noise was probably down to some hay in the nose and he sneezed it out.
Beyond relived that they are both okay, I worry so much about them, even though most of the time there's nothing wrong! Thankyou so much for all the help!

Glad it was nothing but it’s better to be sure.
I took Merab to the vet one day for the same thing.
She was not impressed by the examination and I’m sure she was swearing at the vet when she had a thermometer stuck up her bum.
One healthy but decidedly miffed piggy - one relieved slave with a lighter purse

Good that you got a vet check, and glad there's nothing wrong! The first time I heard Piggle hooting while eating we were in a panic, but after reassurance from our vet we've just got used to Piggle diving snout first into her playpen floor hay on saturday mornings then hooting and honking for an hour- some piggies are just greedy and inhale their food, but until you are sure that's all that's going on its always best to get a vet check to set your mind at rest :)

Hey, glad they were all ok. I’ve booked my piggie into the vets tomorrow for the same thing. I’ve heard her do it before, but thought I’d get her checked as she’s 3.5 yrs now.

Good luck for tomorrow @Melly78 hopefully she’s just fine.

Glad to hear they got a clean bill of health. One of the girls makes that noise (I suspect Coco) but she’s fine. It doesn’t stop me wondering what’s going on and worrying.

That’s how I feel as my Ruffles has no other symptoms.
Vets had a good check and gave baytril for small amount of nasal discharge. I’m going to change bedding as it could be that. Will see how she goes xx
