Hi all,

My piggie Gordon who we've had for about 4 weeks has always seemed to be much noiser in terms of his breathing than Clover. I've got home tonight and he's particularly noisy.

He makes some raspy noises sometimes whilst sitting, but tonight is making a lot when he's eating - he has no other symptoms, is eating absolutely loads, no problems with his eyes or nose, doesn't seem lethargic at all.

I've just changed their bedding and fleece as I do every night although he still seems to be making the same noise, Clover seems fine as usual.

How would I be able to tell if this is perhaps a bit of hay stuck or food rather than it being a URI? I will of course book a vets appointment first thing in the morning if it carries on

Thanks

Please have your boy checked by a vet to make sure that it is not URI. As he is chipper and hungry, it is less likely that it is, but any vet will treat for it is there is the least doubt because it can kill if left untreated.

If it isn't, or if a course of antibiotics doesn't change anything, you are looking at potential issues with hay dust, pollen, dry air etc.

Until then, please place a bowl of steaming water next to the cage and replace it from time to time. See whether that is helping to alleviate the noisy breathing.

So cute! Be sure to monitor him to see if it comes back. Hadley had on-and-off hooting/noisy breathing that wasn't constant, but did recur fairly often, and did end up needing to be treated for a low-grade respiratory infection. It completely resolved after we found the right antibiotic (the first one wasn't a good match and didn't clear it completely.) Hopefully it was a one-off and won't come back, but if it does it's still worth a check even if he doesn't appear to be otherwise sick.

Mistletoe had some hoarse brwathing which has been cured by a course of baytril.

Good luck. Hope you can get it sorted.
