Hi, as some of you know my 3 little fellas had a nasty case of ringworm, lice and mites when we brought them. After all the treatment from our vet was finished about a month ago they have made a full recovery.
Over the last few weeks I've noticed my Oreo scratching again and on occasions biting himself, He's brushed and checked over daily and Ive not seen or felt anything on his fur no dandruff, running lice, dry patches etc so I had put it down to it being a habit, as that's all he had know from birth until recently was being itchy and unwell.
Today my daughter noticed he was scratching a lot more than normal so I checked his fur and he looks like he's got dandruff, but no running lice, lumps or dry patches I was wondering what people who had used 'lice and easy' thought to it ? Does it work ?
He's had a course of puppy strong hold during his vet treatment so I can not believe he's properly got mites again! I don't understand where and how he got them either he's on fleece and newspaper bedding and eating a recommended hay from here.
Any help is very grateful
Kell :)

The dandruff makes me think it may be fungal. If you tug the hair does it come out? Imaverol dip is really good for fungal infections (it's available online) - you leave it on and repeat weekly for three weeks. I haven't used Lice 'n' Easy myself, but it comes highly recommended, but obviously it's a treatment for lice, not fungus.

I was thinking some kind of fungal too, there are so many different types. I agree with the Imaverol recommendation.

I buy it from here:

http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Enilconazole-100mg_ml-100ml/productinfo/ENILCON/

It is not sold under the Imaverol brand but it is the same thing and you can actually purchase it for small animals without a prescription.

I would also look at removing grains from their diet as they are difficult for them to process which can contribute to an overload of Candida which in turn can lead to fungal issues.

Thank you, I was reading on their website about the fungal shampoos and I ended up being sent to the lice and easy shampoo may be I clicked on the wrong bit lol.
I will look into the dip now thank you, I think his fur can be easily pulled out but I will double check this.
What could of caused him to get another fungal infection?

It could be a multitude of things, diet, humid weather, being run down from the ringworm etc, or just pure bad luck.

Just seen your reply Helen, I think it's just my bad luck really lol.
We had that wet weather a week ago they came inside for a few days until it improved. I clean them out properly every 3 days and change their newspaper upstairs hallway twice a day as it's been getting very wet (from urine) and grubby.

There are mixed feelings on Burgess, I am not a fan due to most types (except the mint) containing mollases, and all versions contain grains. However, it is a debatable subject and I know many members feed them. I have had no fungal issues since feeding a grainless diet though. I feed the Bunny pellets from Zooplus. I will of course be listing all brands in my sticky when I finally get round to finishing it.

Thank you Katie, I keep hearing from people (not on here) that their guineas were never ill, never went to the vet etc and lived happy lives yet mine are not even 6 months old yet and they are not well again :( (tears) x
I couldn't believe it when I saw your username in this section again :( don't blame yourself though Hun, you're clearly doing everything right! x

I for one will be looking at your sticky Helen, as it's a minefield out there trying to find the best food possible to feed our piggies, i do plan on switching to bunny once I've recovered from losing a months wage on their ringworm treatment. Thank you for being so helpful (as always) Helen :)

It is pricey but you only need to feed each pig no more than 5 pellets a day and they can be broken into 3. Another option is the Vitakraft Emotion prebiotic which is also grainless and is my backup pellet. It contains fruit though so not as good for my pigs with Interstitial cystitis.

I will cover all brands in the sticky though so members can decide for themselves.

I know Hun :( I'm posting on here again I didn't expect to be again so soon, like Helen said may be bad luck that sounds about right in my case lol. X

Imaverol is really effective, I swear by it. I would dip once a week for 4 weeks, but dip all pigs in case. Patch test for 48 hours behind the ear first though.

Oh no didn't realise you were poorly, hope you feel better soon.

You put a small amount of the neat product on the bald patch behind the ear and see if there is any kind of reaction like excessive redness or blistering

Thank you Helen
My youngest brought a nasty tummy bug back from holiday with her at the weekend, it was mine and my sons turn to get today, I'm feeling a lot better in the last few hours. I've really missed my boys today but my 11 year old is great with the piggies so she's been sorting them out, I did drag myself out of bed to spot clean etc at tea time :)

Awww I'm so sorry Kell! That must be so hard. I hope I never have to find out myself. You're such a good piggy mom, those boys are so lucky to have you.

Hellen, what is your opinion on oxbow food? Do you like the vitakraft above better? And if so why?

I am a firm believer in preventative care. Like you can save some money now on cheeper food, but you'll pay for it later at the vets office (not saying those animals never get sick).

But I believe you are what you eat. I wish someone made me eat as well as my animals lol.

I only want to feed them the best. I can't find bunny here so I have them on oxbow natural science.

Keep your chin up Kell. You are an excellent piggy mummy and this sounds like a rotten case of bad luck! I know the boys will get A star care whatever they need, lets just hope it's easily treated! x

We only have Oxbow Essential here I think so that is all I have looked at so far, though I know at one point they did an organic one called Benne Terra or something like that which wasn't too bad. As far as I am aware Oxbow is better than a lot of British brands and the calcium isn't too high, and neither is the protein. It does have a few debatable ingredients though such as molasses and soya and grains of course.

On another forum I am on I think they were looking at a pellet called Farmer Dave or something like that which was American and very natural but the shipping to the UK was huge so they didn't look into it anymore. Have a look around and see if any are grainless, you can always message me to see what I think of the ratios etc.
