Hey. I'm hoping someone can help. Ive got two very healthy male guineapigs who are both around a year old. They came to me on Gerty guineapig food, but i noticed a lot was getting thrown away(selective feeding) so i changed them to Supa Guinea Excel pellets which they will eat a small amount of. I weaned them onto it slowly by putting Gertie Guineapig food and the pellets in a bowl, but am now finding they eat very little mix, if any. Obviously I'm worried that they're not getting the nutrients they need. I must also stress that they eat all of their veggies everyday. Can anybody help please?

mine have pets at home nuggets, they didn't like supa guinea excel, so maybe give them a go.

Yeah i could do that. I just dont want to upset their tummies too much by keep changing their food.

I did exactly the same as you. When I first got Lennie, he came with half a bag of mix from Tescos but after reading on here about selective feeding and high sugar content, I switched to supa guinea excel. I just did a complete switch and had no problems at all, all my pigs love it.

Lucky you lavendar jade. My piggies arent taken by it. I think i will try the p@h nuggets.

Mine don't like Supa Guinea Excel and its not the best food out there for pet guineas. I wouldn't worry too much if the veg is all going and they get hay, the vits and minerals start to go down when the bags open anyway.

hi mine wouldnt touch those pellets either, none of my 7 would! i put mine on to science selective after those and all of them will eat those willingly, the dish is always empty at supper time ready for a re-fill lol

Hiya,

Mine came on Gertie as well and I found they were really selectively feeding. We are slowly introducing pets @ home nuggets, and they really seem to like them. They eat a good portion of it every day now. The first time i introduced it, I have them their normal amount of gertie, and put a handful of P@H on the top. They ate all the P@H and ignore the gertie.

Mind you....i think my pigs are a bit fickle! They always seem to pay more attention to anything new...

I find as well that if you give them a whole fresh batch they eat more. Sound obvious, but once a week i do this. Must taste better 'fresh'!

There's no harm at all in giving them mostly nuggets, and as a treat a handful of gertie. Someone on here recommended that to me, and it does go down well!

I think ill try them on the p@h nuggets and see how that goes down. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Hi i have the same problem except i give mine pets at home nuggets, i got them just over a week ago and in the first few days they ate most of the nuggets but since theyve been getting lots of veg they seem to have really cut down on them, i see them eat some nuggets but very few, they get 3 different veg, loads of hay and some grass everyday and everything else gets eaten just not many nuggets, they dont seem 2 stop eating hay! is this normal? could it be that they'd just rather have the veg and grass instead and get full as they're still only about 9weeks old?xx

I wouldn't worry too much if the pigs are getting regular veggies and unlimited hay, the pellets are really 3rd in line of importance.

My piggies wolf down their Cavy Cuisine but weren't as bothered about Excel when they used to get it.
