Hi I just wondering if anyone can help. My new pig Gizmo sounds like she has been smoking 20 a day the little wheek sounds normal but when it`s time for food or hay it`s as if she cant get that high any more. Is this normal in some pigs.?

Yes, perfectly normal for some. It could be seen as a cause for concern if a usually noisy piggie suddenly loses their voice (some say they get a "sore throat" ), but if the pig is otherwise happy and healthy, there's nothing to worry about.

I have a couple of completely silent piggies. I have had Gwen for 18 months and I've yet to hear her utter a single sound! She does wheek but it comes out as a whisper, no actual sound.

One of my sows has a real problem with her 'squeak box' - the harder she tries the more hoarse it becomes. It's quite funny really but one shouldn't laugh! She has always been that way so I assume there is nothing wrong, it's just the way she is. A bit like me when I try to sing....

I have the whole range. Quiet ones that you never hear, loud ones that scream so loud that their ears move, hoarse ones and normal ones.

Zoe for example is very raspy but her babies are very very loud. And the babies have a very whiny quality to their voices that remind me of the noise a balloon makes when you let the air out by pulling the mouth apart to a tight slit.

Dizzy, who's just turned five, has finally discovered her big squeak - up till Easter she heaved, but nothing came out. And now I wish she'd stayed quiet, because she screams for grass at least once or twice per hour!

chesney does this aswell. he sounds like he tries to wheek, but can't quite manage it and it's all husky and smoker like! aww. he does occasionally wheek by accident and looks really shocked that he made that noise! bless him! :))
