I just picked up two pigs for my mom for her birthday and I was holding one of them last night and noticed some white worm shaped bugs crawling in the hair around her eye. She does have a some hair missing on her chest and rump, and seems to be a bit lazy. Doesn't seem to be in any pain though, so that's a plus.

We've only had one guinea pig before and had no health issues with him at all, so now we don't really know how to handle this. The first question is that is this mites or fleas? I did some research and though it might be mites but I'm really not sure. The second thing is how do I go about treating this, and am I able to treat this on my own or would it be best to take them to a vet?

Thank you in advance for any and all help!

Please have them both seen by a decent vet for a proper diagnosis! Home treating on spec can make things worse rather than better. Please make sure that you are not dealing with fly strike (maggots), which needs to be treated asap. It may be lice, but you need a proper diagnosis and the appropriate treatment with the right strength for the size/age of your mum's piggies. What kind of place did you get them from?

We have got a piggy savvy UK vets locator on the top bar. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/

With members from all over the world, it is very helpful for us to give you advice that is appropriate for your part of the world if you added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/general area. Click on your name on the top bar, then go to personal details/location. Thanks!

As you have got them just recently, you can hopefully send any vet bills to them, especially if they fall into the quarantine period of the first two weeks.

Please do not use shop products; they are geared towards the prevention, but not the treatment of parasites. Some products can be dangerous for guinea pigs!
