Now Sundae Is Having Respiratory Symptoms!

I'm so upset! I had Hadley at the vet this morning because she was having intermittent hooting, no other symptoms and I was honestly thinking it was just environmental and was just being safe. The vet thought it could be environmental or it could be a minor URI and gave her an antibiotic just in case. Later this afternoon, I peaked in on them and saw that Sundae, who was fine this morning, now has runny eyes and increased work of breathing and I suspect that she has a URI too, except that she has gotten hit much harder because she is almost 7 years old and has other medical problems. I called the vet back and they booked her in emergently in about an hour. I am so upset... Sundae has been through so much and I don't want to lose her to something like this so suddenly. :( I also feel responsible because if I had taken Hadley in sooner, Sundae might never have caught it... but like I said, she never really appeared sick, I really though I was being overly cautious. I'll update when I get home. :( Please send some good vibes to Sundae.
 
Fingers and paws crossed for Sundae, and I hope it's good news :( but please, I know easier said than done but don't blame yourself, the two things may not even be related.
 
Sending healing vibes to both your piggies. Those ifs, buts and maybes are natural thoughts but don't blame yourself. You are an experienced, knowledgeable piggie slave and your animals are lucky to have a loving home with you. Be kind to yourself.:hug:
 
How did she get on?

Don't beat yourself up, you where already being cautious taking Hadley to the vet so if anything, you have already caught this sooner than most would. X
 
I'm so sorry, don't beat yourself up about things piggies can be fine one minute & then they go down the next, it just happens. Massive hugs coming your way for you & your piggies.
 
Unfortunately, Sundae passed away last night. We are unsure exactly what happened... it's possible she developed a respiratory infection from Hadley that pushed her into heart failure, but as her lungs sounded fairly clear, it's also possible that she had a more acute crisis, like a heart attack. Thankfully, it was really quick and really peaceful, with me and two of the kids, so she didn't suffer at all and was surrounded by people who loved her. It's really hard, but at the same time we had nursed Sundae through so many illnesses before and got her to almost the age of seven, which is so much more than we expected from her, so although we will miss her a lot, we also feel good about the life that we were able to give her.
We let Hadley see her and she seems subdued but is eating and drinking. She is on day two of antibiotics and we have not heard her wheezing today at all, thankfully. We are going to give her lots of time with the humans this week while she completes her course of antibiotics, and after she is done the 7 to 10 day course of antibiotics, we will try to find a new companion for her. We don't want to bring anyone into the house until her respiratory tract is clear.

Thanks so much for all the help and guidance I have gotten about Sundae over the years, with her bladder and teeth and long drawn-out abscess. I very much appreciate it all! I will post a memorial in the Rainbow Bridge section when I feel up to it. I am not quite ready right now.

My son said that if there's a guinea pig heaven, he is sure that she is there with Linney, who was her companion for 4 years of her life, and that she has no bladder pain and can see again, so I will think of her like that and be thankful for the years we had together.

Gosh I'm so sorry :-(

I'm glad you can take some comfort that she went peacefully and you are thinking of the long, happy life she had with you rather than her last illness, which is admirable.
