Adult Guinea Pig
How do I say goodbye to the little piggy who started it all?
Nugget and her companion at the time fluffy joined us in 2018. We were very excited to become pet parents for the very first time but little did we know we would have a lot to learn. Along the way she has taught me everything I know about guinea pigs. After falling out spectacularly with fluffy due to hormones a year to the day after we got them she became friends with then little marshmallow. Seeing nuggets personality bloom and her teaching marshmallow how to guinea pig I knew she'd make a great herd leader one day. Baby mal joined the group during lockdown after bereaved fluffy spectacularly rejected her. Nugget thrived being lead piggy to two and almost looked like she was smiling whenever she had her girls following behind her. After fluffy passed she then went on to be boss piggy of 5 after flower and caramel joined her herd last year. She cared so well for flower when she was sick last year and kept the group together following her loss. She pushed through her own health issues with ic and despite her own age and health catching up with her supported mal through her jaw drama and then the group through her loss. She had been loosing weight for several weeks and had become very bony. Last weekend I came home from a nightshift Saturday morning to find her recovery food dried around her mouth and her not eating. I took her to the vets where her teeth had started to go funny so she stayed to have a dental. She was eating a little better when she came home and took some syringe feed for sammie overnight as well as nibbling some veg but by the time I came in from work the next morning it was very clear she was making her way to rainbow bridge. We always said she would be boss piggy until the day she died and she was. I came home to find her unable to lift her head and her companions mid dominance dispute. I lifted her up to try one more feed but she had lost the ability to swallow by this point. We rushed her to the emergency vets who confirmed that her guts had stopped and temp was low. We helped her across the bridge peacefully wanting to spare her the last stages of a natural death.
Nugget was with me through my entire pet parenting journey so far and my constant through 7 previous losses. The flags are still flying at half mass for her. She was a little piggy with a huge personality and she leaves a huge hole in our lives.
Nugget thankyou for introducing me to the world of guinea pigs, I'm not sure what I'll do without you but I hope your eating all the food at rainbow Bridge and looking after flower and mal
