Mine are currently on excel but i am wondering whether to change their nuggets to a hay based nugget such as oxbow!

SO which is BEST on a nutrition basis?

I know i am considering non uk but want the best for the pigs......rolleyes

Oxbow Cavy Cuisine. It's Timothy hay based so, nutritionally, best for the pigs.

I give mine Burgess and Oxbow cavy cuisine mixed (as it's really dear!)

They took a while to come round to the Oxbow but now they eat it really well. They wont tolerate Wagg nuggets and have even gone off the Black currant and Oregano Burgess too. Only Oxbow and Burgess. Saves a bit of money giving them a mix rather than just the dear stuff.

I agree - when you getting the Oxbow hay then? Mine absolutely LOVE it and if you buy bulk it can't be as bad as buying little bags?

Spot the hay addicts! I'm going to the pet shop on Saturday to check out there piggie stuff! I hope they have a big selection! rolleyes

So if oxbow is the best do you then have to feed less? not sure on hays - is there a reason to feed stalkier hays as mine are not keen on the stalky stuff.... they are getting pampered piggies hay, then going to try dust free

I found that my pigs ate less of the Oxbow than other dry foods. I wondered if it's slightly more filling, being hay-based.

It doesn't matter greatly about whether the hay is very stalky or not. I feed Orchard Grass which is very soft and more like rough blades of grass than thick stalks. The Timothy was much more stalky.

mine have decided they are not eating stalky and as i have soft as bedding they just eat that instead! was wondering whether it was required for teeth wearing?

Hmmm good question thanks for asking may try Roger on Oxbow he loves the excel blackcurrant and oregano. Currently he has a wee bit of that, ordinary excel and science selective mixed.

was wondering whether a mix was best but unsure whether that was a silly idea? rolleyes

I personally do not think you need to change them from excel, as they will be getting everything they need in there diet with veg, hey and food! Unless of course you are unhappy! :)

I'm working on a mix being a good idea as if I can't get one at least his tummy is used to at least one other. I think a mix if you are going to get oxbow is a good idea as if you are like me and can only obtain it online I'd hate to run out and that be the only one the wee mites are used to if you know what I mean.

I like giving a mixture of pellet brands as it gives them more variety. I'm less inclined to feed them 'treats' as they get different tastes of two fine quality dry foods. :))

Mine are on Oxbow cavy cuisine, they dont get any other pellets and both them and myself are happy with this,my personal opinion is that apart from veg and hay. pellets should be kept what they are used to as i cant imagine how changes in the diet would affect them.
Mine eat less of the Oxbow so it does work out a little cheaper then i first thought.
I never ever feed mine treats as i dont believe most are good or safe.
They get there hay/pellets/veg/fruit/grass and i think that is good and healthy for them.
The only treats they get are the oxbow treats like the appletwig ball things and they were brough by forum members as christmas presents for my pigs so other than that no treats for mine

Oxbow

Is Oxbow terribly expensive over there? I've found it for $13.99 (£8.74) here in the states. (Though I can't say much since I spend around $45 (£28.11) for 20lbs of organic cat food....I really can't afford the extra expense but all of my girls deserve the best) The large bags of hay are cheaper in the long run than the little bags of Kaytee hay here. ($9.99/ £6.24) I've only been giving Pancake the timothy hay..though I have read there are other types....It's hard to grasp the differences in currency sometimes....

Oxbow does usually seem more costly here than in it's native USA, the price is usually higher as it's an imported product.
What size was the bag you found for $13.99?

where to buy oxbow cavy cuisine at the cheapest price?

as title says? where is cheapest including the p&p?

and i do not want a mahoosive bag!:(|)

So far the hay experts for a 2.25kg bag is cheapest including P&P mind you if you can collect from Pampered piggies you are better off. Anyone know of anywhere better?

Price

The 13.99 was a 5lb bag/ 2.26 kilograms . What I found odd is that the Amazon US site has a pet section and carries Oxbow for 8.89 (The 5lb bag again. comes out to about $16 with shipping) but when I checked the UK site they don't carry any pet supplies. It's one of the problems with some of the things we depend on here. Like we have a company called World Market here that imports all sorts of things from other countries (Lemon curd comes to mind as well as turkish delights and Penguin Bars (I guess they are known as biscuits over there?) but the products can be horribly expensive compared to what we would normally buy. (Americans I must say just can't make Lemon Curd right it's either horribly tart or way too sweet. No middle ground) I wish things weren't like that. You'ld think with all the advances in technology they could do something about that.

this is a really good thread. i've started mixing supreme science stuff in with my piggles excel... i only started doing that two days ago, and have since noticed that they have picked out every science selective nugget, but left some of the excel... i'm going to see if a pattern emerges. i'm currently thinking of keeping that mix, but using the science selective as the main part and putting less excel into the mix.

p.s. if the question above was about penguin bars being called biscuits, then as far as i'm aware, they're bars here too. at the very least, that's what i've always called them
