Hello, I wanted to know whether the nuts and berry mixes you can buy at the super markets are any good for guinea pigs? I have bought some recently and I don't know wether they are safe for them? I haven't given them any yet, I thought they might be good for them to nibble on? Also, is the Guinea Pig Vitamin Solution that you add to water good for piggies?

Thank you for any advice given x

Guinea pigs must never have nuts. They cannot eat processed food.

Adding vitamin drops to water alters the taste and pigs will often not drink it. Any vitamin is so diluted they do not get the dosage. If you want to feed vitamin c you can buy tablets especially for small animals.

Nuts and dried fruit are very much on the no-no list for piggies.

I would also not recommend adding anything to the water. You can't control the intake and you will find that your piggies will drink noticeably less. It also goes green very quickly and only helps promote the growth of algae. It is much better to feed either vitamin C rich veg and herbs daily or if you wish, syringe or give some oxbow vitamin C directly.

Thank you for the advice, can they eat seeds?

Seeds, like nuts, are too fattening. There is also the added danger that seeds can stick between teeth and cause major problems.

Dried herbage or apple, pear and willow wood/bark are the best treats for them.

Guinea pigs have evolved to thrive in grasslands that are dry for most of the year; that means that they are healthiest on a rather nutrionally poor diet which they are good at getting the most out of. By spoiling them with foods that are too rich and fat, you are not doing them any favour at all.
