At 9.30am yesterday our old girl Nuts (robo hamster) was put to sleep.
We found her on Sunday morning with a bit of blood in her bed. When we used to put her in her ball she would run around the lounge like a thing possessed but yesterday she wasn't having any of it. We noticed she had something coming out of her bum and it was covered in blood. We thought she may have rectal prolapse. We took her to the vets on Monday morning and the vet her belly was very swollen and bruised (which it was and we didn't notice as she was very difficult to handle). Vet said she thought she had a tumour and the tumour was getting so big it was forcing her guts out. She said the other option was rectal prolapse. She said they can operate but with an animal her size she probably wouldn't pull though and it would be very difficult to do so and she wouldn't recommend it as it would only prolong her suffering. She also said we could try some antibiotics but again she wasn't sure if it would help and may just prolong her suffering. The only other option was to put her to sleep so we decided to end her suffering and do the deed. I only hope I made the right decision as it has been plaguing me ever since. She did seem to be in a lot of pain and was hunched up and didn't want to get out of her bed. She was 2 months short of her 2nd birthday which I'm told is very old for a Roborobski hamster.
Rest in peace at the bridge my dear baby. I hope you find Scruffy, Silver, Patch and Chloe there and you will look after each other until we meet again. Don't make too much noise on the big wheel and share with your friends!! Love you forever honey x
