Hi all.

I’ve previously posted on here about my worries of one of my pigs getting OD (osteodystrophy) other wise known as satins disease. He does look very much like a satin piggy.

Does anyone have any recommendations of what I could give him that may prevent quicker development of the disease?

He’s currently getting - “oxbow joint support” tablets everyday alongside multivitamin supplements from the same brand every other day (they contain omega 3, good for the bones).

I want to ensure anyway that I can that he’s getting some support for his joints and bones, just in case he will get it.

I will be speaking with a vet soon about it and possibly look into an x Ray. So far he is absolutely fine in himself, no trouble eating, he’s very active in fact he popcorns and does zoomies the most out of both of my pigs. He’s a lovely lively little man so I want to try and help him.

Thanks

Satin syndrome is a very complex disease process which often starts with the kidneys causing an issue with calcium absorption in the bones. There is nothing you can do or give to reverse this problem but not all satins get this issue however most satins almost certainly get kidney disease later in life. Giving too much calcium will also potentially cause bladder problems so I would not advise it.

If you want a more comprehensive breakdown of what it is I'm happy to chat at some point. Right now sounds like your little chap is fine. They often will develop symptoms by 18 months of age if there is an issue.

Do you have any other photos of your little one to see if he is a satin?
