I am unable to have guinea pigs anymore as our dog is allergic.

So last night I was lying in bed and had a mini eureka moment, in order to try to ascertain if he would be allergic to a skinny pig, I'm seeking a favour, so here is my question/favour, does anyone here have a skinny pig and if so would you be willing to help me, i.e if I sent you a piece of fleece to pop in with your piggie then send it back so I can see what happens or do you think I've finally lost the plot in my desperation?!

Feel free to tell me I'm completely insane or it would probably not really help.

You've not lost the plot but I hope you can figure it out! Could your dog be allergic to the hay or bedding?

Unfortunately it was when he came into contact with them (they were in the lounge and on the lawn) or when I didn't wash my hands and change clothing after handling them, so having discussed it with the vet it was felt it was the piggies that were the problem not the bedding (fleece) or hay (although my other dog is probably allergic to that but as she's pretty much allergic to life we just have to do our best for the wee mite)

could you not have pigs and keep them in a room away from the dogs?make sure you wash your hands etc, keep a certain section of garden just for piggies?by the way i like the skinny pig idea

Ah ok, that is a difficult one to solve then. With human allergies, guinea pig urine is often the problem as opposed to the hair. I can see why seeing if Skinny pigs would work is an option.

daleksarah hubby won't wear that idea, the poopy head!

Laura-CCC4 well darn I didn't know that we were assuming it was hair or dander etc never even thought of urine....hmmm looks like I may just have to give up for now and formulate another cunning plan.

This may sound really stupid, but....

Can your dog have tablets? Like i get hayfever and take tablets...

:S

Trust me we tried various things to help control his allergies (conventional and homeopathic) but to no avail it's down right frustrating and he only (touch wood) has 2 allergies one controlable one not and wouldn't you know it the piggie one not *grrrr*

erm, excuse my ignorance (I'm new to piggies) but what is a skinny pig? is it hairless?
i hope you manage to find a soloution to your situation, i have had mine only a few days and already I'm hooked :-)

Yep a skinny pig is pretty much hairless only a few bits on face maybe feet, I've never met one in person.

You can also get baldwin guinea-pigs, which are another type of hairless guinea-pig but I think they have more hair then the skinny, but I'm not totally sure. Could you maybe keep the guinea-pigs upstairs and the dog downstairs?

Balwins if I'm correct are born covered in hair but lose it all and end up completely bald but they are harder to come by than skinny pigs!

I live in a bungalow so I couldn't do that unfortunately :))

I've been thinking about it and skinny's still have a bit of hair so may not work out anyway bummer but I'd still like to test the wee man to see if he's allergic.

Hi, it would be really helpful if you could get your vet to refer your pooch to a veterinary dermatologist. My dog has had horrendous allergy problems which has resulted in impaired hearing and major infection. This is now just about cleared and he is going back for a check up on Wednesday. Whilst he was under sedation having the camera down his ear, which was where the allergy to yeast was affecting, they gave him an allergy test which involved 60 needle pricks to look for reactions. Turns out he is allergic to cats (and he sleeps with ours every night) which is probably why his eyes and nose are runny. Rye Grass, Clover and Yeast. Now his ear is sorted, the dermatologist will look at his other allergies, and she has said that all are treatable and controllable, so this could really help your dog if you could do this.

Just a quick point, you are very unlikely to find any Baldwins in the UK as none have been imported (as far as i know), but there are quite a few people with skinnys so if you were to 'google' them you might find someone near to you that has one.

I have met one, she was a lovely piggie, fantastic personality, but the breed is not for me. Coming from a 'rescue' background, i'm afraid anything without hair makes me think of ill animals.

Best of luck with your search.

May I ask why you had the prick test done as oppossed to the blood test's for the allergies? (eta. that sounds somewhat off but itsn't meant to just curious) we had our other dog tested as her allergies are numerous, when they phoned with the results it was basically she's allergic to the planet!

I'm glad you have got your darling sorted as allergies are horrendous for them. I know for a fact my hubby would not allow that to be done to his dog who is the one with problems with piggies. But hopefully eventually I can narrow down what about piggies it is that sets him off as his other allergie has been dealt with nicely.

Thanks for you suggestions hun I really appreciate any amd all.

I know about the Baldwins being very scarce in the UK, if it turned out that was the only way to go though I'd probably import but thats the very last desperate line to go for I feel. If worst comes to worst I will just continue to oggle everyone else's :(|)

Hairless doesn't bother me as my wee doggie is hairless :))
