Hi everyone

Sorry for the really disgusting topic but I need to ask about poo.

Yesterday I noticed Bailey had a really odd looking poo, it was like a normal pellet except it looked sort of like it had split open and there was this orangey gunk coming out of it. I showed it DP and we decided just to keep an eye on Bailey.

Today when doing spot cleaning I found another poo that looked like this.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Bailey is eating and drinking as normal, behaving normally and most of his poo's are normal too, theres just been theese two odd ones that I've notcied.

Am I being neurotic?

(Sorry again for the gross descriptions!)

no idea for sure, but a thought that came to me, how's his hay consumption? is his diet varied? i will email laura ccc4 and ask her to read, as i think she MAYBE able to help

Has there been anymore odd pellets?
They may be related to his diet.
Occasionally you may see an undigested corn seed in a pellet, these can give an orange coloured appearance.
Very rarely there can be blood in a pellet, this can also colour the pellet.

No more odd pellets as yet, will check again when we do the next spot clean this evening.

His diet is Burgess Excel Nuggets, Unlimited Hay (Currently they have Burgess Fresh Forage). Twice a day he will have a small bowl of mixed veg: Round Lettuce or Romaine lettuce every day, Pepper every day and then a few times a week he will have, corriander, parsley, greens, cucumber, celery, carrots, spinach, basil.

He eats really really well and is happy in himself, popcorning around, He's full of energy.

It's just weird and I'm not sure if maybe we should get him in at the vets just to get him checked over for peace of mind. I'm such a worrier.

I don't blame you for worrying, odd things make us all worry! I think it maybe undigested food. If it happens again, get him to the vets and take the poop with you. they maybe able to get it tested! i did put a message on laura's wall on facebook, hopefully she'll see it soon. but her life's pretty hectic, so she may not see it for a while. best of luck! xxxxx

I've not been on FB yet but thanks for pointing me here Claire. :)

I can't really add much on to what's been said already, my first thought is also undigested food. At the moment I'd just wait and see if it happens again - and make note of what you're feeding him each day for the next week so that if it does happen again, you can figure out if it's likely to be a particular food that he just doesn't break down well.

One other thing that may be worth doing - if he has any more of the unusual poops - is to ring the vet and ask if he'll take a look at the poop. Just say you think it might be undigested food but you're not entirely sure, the pig seems otherwise healthy aside from this so you'd just like to know it's nothing sinister. Hopefully the vet will let you take the poop on its own. :)) (Although the odds are the vet will probably want to see Bailey too.)

Thanks Claire for asking Laura to take a look and for the words of wisdom.

Thanks Laura for your thoughts, hopefully it is just undigested food as you said especially seeing as he's fine in himself. There hasn't been any unusual pellets today so I'll just keep an eye on him like you said over the next couple of weeks.

Bailey has never been to the vet before, he's never needed too so hopefully he won't need to make his first visit anytime soon :)

Thanks again everyone. x
