I have had a bad day, Alfie our dog was caught ripping his bed up, so he was put in the garden, then i had to do the school run and that's like
s040.gif
banging my head against a brick wall, Amy is ill and was up during the night,
Then to top it off i got home and where it has rained so much our garage door has swollen and willonly pull shut not close :-\ and the dog Alfie (an Irish wolfhound) has got in a terrorised the guineas, he has never done this before, but i suppose natural instinct and all that.
The problem is i have an open topped cage

this picture is of before Alfie got in. all the guineas are fine, but very shaken he has broken he front of the cage and pulled the green tunnel over! Can guineas die of shock?
I have put the blind down and closed the garage up to make it as dark and quiet as possible,

Help i feel a little wobbly?

Alfie has not been punished for this he was just doing what dogs do,

If you have a dog I think it is very very unwise to have an open-topped hutch, particularly if you are out.

Those poor guineas are absolutely terrified. They rely on you to protect them from everything.

Damn, sometimes ive heard they can die from shock
maybe you should think of making a mesh frame to go over the top?

I have a staffy dog... i also have an open C+C cage but luckily theyre in my bedroom :)
I actually had bronx (the dog) sitting in my room last night while i cleaned it and he seemed quite interested in wilson rumbling at cindy... everytime he puts his ears up at them i say no real firmly and he backs off... good dog :smitten:

Yes... one of my guinea pigs died of shock... i had her in a box and ( i was young) i put the box on the floor and went out the front... my dog nell thought mmm... dinner time and stuck her head in the box and scared the poor thing to death... STUPID GIRL (me) >:(
Keep them calm and warm and I'm sure they will be fine :)

It is in a garage with a latch that locks, if it wasn't for this damp weather the door wouldn't have swollen up, i just can't believe he has done this, he hates the garage he never goes in, what a time to change his mind, I do feel very bad over it an my OH WILL have to take the door off to night and plain it so i can latch it shut, I can't have this happening again,

What has happened has happened so try to calm down and take deep breaths.
You are right that you cannot get cross with Alfie as he was showing natural curiosity but to Lucindas point, I really think that you should consider a review of your piggy area. Some sort of cover would be great
As this has happened once, it can happen again. Esp now alfie knows that the piggies are there.

just to change the subject,id love to see a piccy of Alfie as thats my fav dog

Its just so sad as the children can come in and the pigs really like it, but you are all very right now Alfie knows they are there and he can get probable a fantastic reaction from them, I will not be able to trust him :(

This is the devil himself. trust me butter does melt in his mouth >:D

Gladly but i warn you he is hard work, purely because he so big his head is 4 ft when he stands proud.

Its happened them, dont beat your self up about it , just secure the area & concentrate on tlc for the piggers, & a large glass of something for you ! ::)
i have very big dogs who arnt allowed near the pigs as they are to excitable & might squish them , not harm them i add jut lick them to death and sit on them ! but i also have a shar pei who is with them all the time in fact just had some having a cuddle with him on the bed !
piggies can die of shock but i think by know they wud have had 'had' the shock if that makes sense !
some dogs r grat with other animals , some arnt , doesnt make them bad dogs ^-^

thats fine for me,ours is a wolfy x beardie or something like that ,i only prefer big dogs anyway ;)

Well all the girls are still alive and i am celebrating with a BIG glass of wine they all had extra turnip and greens, Alfie is just being ignored little buggar, its a sham e i love him or he would be out on his ear :smitten:

Thanks for listening, i know i was a complete plant for letting this happen , but i honestly didn't think Alfie would do this, but he is a dog and they convert back to natural instinct so quickly, but as i said the garage door was pulled to and normally he hates the garage :(.

My OH and I are coming up with some sort of lid for the pen.

Just wanna say I really feel for you them. And it was brave of you to post it all on here. As a newbie I'm bound to have some disasters but at least I'll know that these things can happen to anyone.

I hope the pigs are ok

Thanks they are all doing well (big sigh) and the confrontation has left them unblemished in charactor and are still as cheeky as ever ;D

Alfie has unfortunatly got a likeing for the noise am goin to have o have eyes in the back of my head now

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have my guineas inside and I have 2 dogs, a German Shepherd & a spaniel. My guineas are in an open topped pen and the dogs have free access round them all the time, even when I'm out. BUT! they can't get into the pen. We bought second hand grid things - they're about 2.5 feet tall by 2.5 feet wide and they link together with rods. They are for building pens that you can put in the garden. Sorry I'm not explaining them very well! but PAH sold something similar. We drilled holes into wooden strips as a base.

If your dog is likely to want to get to the guineas though, you need something really sturdy. My dogs aren't bothered by them and don't attempt to get to them. Is there a hutch in there that they can get into and which your dog definitely can't access?

we are going to be revamping the whole thing, putting a lid on or building a large cage, but if the garage door is plained so it will fit back in the frame this problem will not be so immanent job for OH for tommow

I feel yuk every time i think about what would of happened and i don't ever want to feel like that again.

them you was so shook up becasue you love them so much and you feel guiilty, but as already said its happened soall you can do is elarn from it which you have, glad the pigs are ok ( yes they can die of shock) and Alfie is a naughty dog whos only doing what is in his nature to do, jsut keep an eye on him becasue the first chance he will pounce ( tie his legs together) only joking ::) my 2 dogs charlie died last july and max have always been good round my pigs but I still never gave them any chance of anything but have some wonderful memorys of dobby and max lying together not long before dobbs died ,
