Hi everyone, just wondered if anyone had some advice on looking after an older piggie?

We have had her 2 years and got her from a rescue home at about 1 year old. She is eating as usual but just seems to be a bit slow and sitting down a bit more than usual. I think she might have a bit of arthritis.

Anything you can recommended would be very useful, just want her to be more comfortable in her old age. Thank for your advice.

Three years old isnt old, I have guineas that age and they are spritely! (unless the estimated age at the rescue was wrong)

Perhaps a visit to the vet could be best for a general check over, there could be an underlying problem.

thanks lavenderjade, my OH thinks i am just worrying and she is fine, just having a quiet day. I am glad to know 3 is'nt old. I will keep an eye on her, she is eating and pooing as usual so will see how she goes.

Is she a satin breed? this breed can suffer from osteodystrophy, a bone disease, just wondered if this was a possibilty?

No, three years old isn't old. I have two sows and a neutered boar who live together aged between three and four years old. We call them "the OAPs" because they seem to spend alot of their time in bed! :))

If your pig is eating and drinking ok but you are still worried, then a visit would help put your mind at rest.

Hi Sally. I agree. 3 years isn't old. My piggie had arthritis in her spine and back legs but she didn't get that until she was nearly 8 years old. She lived 8 years and 3 months in total but some piggies can live until 10. Maybe she is just having a quiet day. Keep an eye on her for the next day or so and if things don't improve then pop her to the vets for a once over. If she's still eating and drinking then that's a good sign. Don't worry. We all worry about our piggies even when they are fighting fit! Plus they are really good at hiding things from us too :)

not sure what breed she is, she does run very fast when she start's, just seems to be sleeping more at the moment
