Old guinea pig

Heya! Yes it's fine to use alongside emeprid, and the rabbit one is the right one don't worry :)
It should also help with the soft poops too hopefully as it contains extra fibre.
Great, thanks so much! He's going to give off at me for all the meds but it needs done lmao. He's poops are more solid today thankfully but again, it's the weight that's the problem. Hopefully the fibreplex helps him out a bit!

I wonder if lots of fresh grass as well as hay would help?
Hes been eating away at his hay, but hopefully the oat hay will help a tad! I'll look into getting them some fresh hay, his brother didn't like it much a few years back so I didn't buy it in a whole lot. His brother is very picky lol

Hi everyone! So we went to the vet today and his brother Devito attended aswell cause he had a bit of a wheeze. He is on Baytril and Metacam, and is in perfect health apart from that!

The vet told me that Chuck doesn't need put to sleep yet. He has a bit more time. He seems bright and about himself, his coat is healthy and shiny. His poop is still mushy but she hopes with the alter in Emeprid that'll even out. He's also been put on Metacam again to control any pain.
He weighs 800 grams so yes he's lost more weight, he's underweight definitely. He's getting tons of critical care, his veggies, hay, and even extra veg but nothing is sticking.

She told me if he zone's out more or bobs his head more or shows any sudden change in mood and appetite that his time will be coming.
I'm very sad, it hurts, but I'm glad that he has a bit more time with us.

Ive started him on probiotics, 3x a day. When he's gassy he gets some gripe water which seems to ease him. There are times he's a bit off his food but I think that's due to discomfort and pain, hopefully the Metacam will ease him and make it easier and more comfy for the time he has left.

I just want to say thank you to everyone. For all your advice, your kind words and your encouragement. Me and Chuck appreciate it lots <3 here's a pic of the little guy for those who'd like to see him!

It is really tough when our piggies start to slow down and you feel hopeless, but you are doing your best for chuck and he knows it.
Fingers crossed you guys get to spend many more happy days together and the medications help to ease his pain/discomfort.

If he is in pain a lot/often did you and your vet decide to keep him on it all the time as a preventative measure, I understand you said he had been put on Metacam again but I am wondering if its situational or perhaps once a day etc. to manage his pain.

He's on the metacam once a day to ease and manage any pain he may be having. Since he is showing some signs of pain like the zoning out, a tad more irritable towards devito (they bicker often tho so nothing too new), and the head bobbing. He picks at his veg a bit, but then I give him a tummy massage and he goes and eats more ferocious so it's definitely a pain/discomfort.

Might be worth splitting his dose in half and giving it twice daily... Guinea pigs have a very fast metabolism and he won't be covered for the full 24 hours on one dose 😊

I was always told twice a day to keep the pain away as it generally wears off after 10 hours. (0.4ml loxicom/ metacam for dogs)
can i ask how much gripe water you give an how often? i currently have an older girl fighting bloat at the moment and i cant get rid of it even with emeprid and ranitidine and painkillers! i hope your boy is okay, its always a sad time when they get older :(

Thanks so much that's really good advice! Idk his exact dose because the syringe is for the one for cats, rhey tell me do it half way up the M on the syringe haha very informative of them lol

I read up that you can give up to 3ml every couple of hours. I give him 1-2ml cause I'm hesitant considering he's on Emeprid, and I give it when he seems a bit bloated or he goes quiet. I'm lucky he's a very outgoing boy and it's easy to sense when he's not feeling his best.
Bloat sucks so bad for them, I hope your baby can feel better soon :( he seems to be hanging in, just know his time is very limited and Sensitive right now so he's getting treated like a king! Thank you for your well wishes <3

It should have the correct dosage and amount to be given per day on the label. Also which animal it is for and the expiry date.

If not please contact them, even if you know what you are doing you should always have the correct information as it is against the law to not be provided on the label, for the safety of you and your animal.

No I have the correct information, it's just the syringe is the syringe that's used for cat doses as they don't have one that pulls up the med properly from that type of bottle. I've rang and clarified doses and frequency already, as both of my boys are on it currently. One to cover potential pain from a minor URI. Feels like all I'm doing with my days right now is 50 million meds and critical care and worrying 😞

I looked it up on the official metacam website and the one prescribed for cats is the one for guinea pigs as well. However I'll use a different syringe so that I'll be able to accurately half his dose for twice the day! Which is great advice. Thank you so much :)

Its okay, both Cat and Dog Metacam is given to small animals in smaller dosages. I understand how tiring and worrying it is, I was just worried they had given you something incorrect if it did not have a label but now I understand.

Remember to take care of yourself during this time.

No I know I'm glad you were worried it's always good to be more thoughtful and careful of things like this. I'm terrible at math, legit awful, so bit of a silly question but what would half of the dose be? He got the full dose this morning so I'll start half doses tomorrow.

Thank you, I will take care of myself. Just lots of loving on him and cuddles.

Just an FYI the cat one is a lot weaker than the dog version.
The dog one will be a much better pain relief for him if you can ask for that next time and see how he goes.
I use this regularly and they react very well to it. They rip the syringe from my hand 🤣

Hahahaha it was Devitos first time being syringed and he was NOT PLEASED at all he gave me a big growl after
That's great advice thank you, I'll bring it up next time he's in :)

What dosage is he on?

Have you spoken to the vet about halving the dose?

What's the current dosage that you're trying to split? I think I missed it if you mentioned it already.

Antibiotics are disgusting tasting ... necessary, but icky. Many piggies resist them.

Yes the cat version has now been licensed for piggies.

If the vet has given you the cat syringe m, then you need to stick to using the cat syringe.

My vet removes the weight unit syringe that comes with it, calculates the correct dose in ml and gives me a 1 ml syringe to use instead.

I haven't spoke to the vet about altering the dose but I'm ringing tomorrow to order Emeprid so I'll ask them then!

How is your piggy doing now?
My girl has had a few funny turns recently (random spinning / eyes flicking back and forth / bloat / head nodding) sounds quite similar to your baby. Erin is 6yrs roughly
