this is madness and I'm in shock! ive spent the day tidying the kids bedrooms and i went out to the bin before and there was a box on my door step thought it weird as its a box paper comes in but just thought maybe it was xmas present as a friend said she`d drop presents off today. well i opened it and had shock of my life inside were 2 baby guinea pigs! its bloody freezing outside and the were in this box just on newspaper!i dont understand who has left them or why I'm not a rescue and not many people know i have guinea pigs and i dont know anyone with them except audrey on here.
sorry I'm crying my eyes out here writing this how can someone do that?i need advice i thought one of them was dead as it didnt moove and both were very cold sounds stupid but i stuffed them both up my jumper for heat.one of them is active but the other one took a while to come active. i sat warming them for a while and ive just put them down and filled the box with hay and given them food they were both starving and ate the carrot and spring cabbage really fast.
what should i do?please any advice is appreciated

i have a hutch in the kitchen they can go in, i use that for when i bring the rabbits in, which i nearly did last night because of the snow.but the hutch is rather crap infact ive nearly binned it only kept for bonfire night for the rabvbits and if weather is too bad

Are you able to keep them?

I cant believe that someone would do something like that and how odd as you said not many people knew you have piggys. If your not able to keep them maybe you could get in touch with a rescue centre and explain what has happened?

I really cant believe how someone could do this on christmas eve!

You did the right thing!

Can you pm nutmeg; she's in Warrington and probably closest to you, if you need accommodation quickly!

Best of luck and a BIG HUG
This is NOT the Christmas present you want to find on your doorstep; but at least those little ones are safe now.

Oh my gosh. Poor babies. Just keep them warm. Thats good if you have a spare hutch. Don't give them too much food at once cuz it can make them poorly if they eat too much too quickly. Little and often is best. How old do you think they are? Are they boys or girls?

What a thing to do in this weather and right on Christmas. :( I would imagine they might be a bit dehydrated, as well as cold/hungry.

lucklily i have that hutch so they have a place to sleep and luckily i have food and stuff should have enough for everyone as i have stocked up couldnt expect nutmeg to come here now its xmas eve and roads are bad anyway.
they are both eating and seem alert- will they be ok?I'm just worried as i dont know how long they have been outside and the smaller one not moving worried me-it is eating. what things should i do to check theyre ok?

It should be OK now that it's warm and eating, but you may want to have a look out for URI or UTI in the next days.

i dont know if theyre boys or girls could be girls as their bits dont look like my boys. they both look like they could be the same sex but i have no experience so could be wrong.
ive just given them a load of food so going to take some away now thanks ive put a bowl of water down but they havent touched it

Look out for raspy/crackly breathing or smelly/bloody pee, or generally signs of being fluffed up, apathetic and off food.

That both are lively now and eating is a very good sign! Hopefully, they'll make it without problems. I'm glad that you can keep them somewhere for the time being!

Poor little mites. Glad that they are safe and warm now. When you pick them up you can listen to their breathing every now and then. Changes in the sound of their breaths could indicate a respiritory infection. Just keep an eye on them in general, look for anything that changes just as you would for your own piggies. Perhaps weigh them so you can monitor that too. Hope you are doing ok too it must have been a shock to find them like that.

thanks I'm going to go make up the cage so that they can settle in there my kitchen is warm but should i put one of the rabbits hot water bottles in under a cushion for extra warmth or will they get too hot?
id brought my rabbits a new water bottle for xmas so they can have that will they know how to drink out of it?they havent touched the water ive put in a bowl but have eaten cucumber

It takes baby pigs a while to figure out water bottles and dishes. They are probably more used to a bottle so you could have both and they could have a choice. I would be careful with hot water bottles in case they chew them. If they are indoors they will be ok without.

maybe a stupid question but mac and Rascal are bedded on fleece with towels can i use their things on these pigs theyve been washed but i dont know if a scent is still there and if thats bad.sorry if i sound stupid

I'm a person who never crys and i cant stop crying now i feel so bad that they may have been out there for ages when ive been upstairs. its xmas eve how can people be so mean.i feel totally stressed as i still have loads to do,my kids get home from their dads in a bit and i havent wrapped all thier presents and what are they going to think?

I cant believe that people can do things like this. I'm sure the babies were just in shock and will come round. When I first got my piggies I didint see them eat or drink for days. Fleece is probably the best bedding for them for warmth, not sure if scent from the boys would cause a problem but I'm sure these little bubs will just be glad to feel safe and secure. What a thing to happen. I know you were rushing about trying to get everything ready for Santa and this is the last thing you need. mega hugs to you hun and know that you are doing a great job in caring for these babies....

I am sure that they will understand when you show them the babies!

Can you turn it either into a Christmas without wrapping paper and simply ask them to close their eyes, or ask them to help wrapping presents for each other? Or are they too young? You could do a present "hunt" and hide their presents in different rooms to find! :))

I'm sure the babies are OK with whatever you provide them with. If they stay indoors in the warmth, they can overheat with the hot water bottle. If you have an extra hide or cosy to cuddle up in, that would be fine!

and thats another worry when my girls see new baby piggies they are going to want to keep them!i cant though! i still have time this evening to get things wrapped probably wont go to bed not that i`ll be able to sleep now.
thank you all for being there I'm starting to calm down now although when i find out who did it i will kill them!its got to be someone i know to have told someone my address I'm not a rescue!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was somebody from your neighbourhood, who might have heard from somebody over the fence that you have guinea pigs.

Perhaps you can ask the girls to each name a piggy for the rescue?

This is terrible, poor you and poor poor piggies! It sounds like you're doing a really good job of taking care of these babies. Well Done you! I think you're coping very well.

Oh my god.. How the hell could someone do that to the poor little mites? At least they are in good hands and I really hope they pull through and find good homes somewhere they will be loved and looked after..

Aww hun what a shock for you and well I can't say what I think of folks who do that sort of thing to such wee defensless animals especially in this weather, it's a disgrace. I hope you are managing for now hun.

Hugs to you for all the stress this has put you under.

THANK GOODNESS YOU WENT OUTSIDE !!!

I've had boxes of piggies dumped on my front doorstep in the past but we very rarely use the front door as the drive is at the back of the house. I now make a point of looking out the front twice a day - just in case :{

Sounds as though you saved these 2 in the nick of time :) I really cant believe people sometimes - how heartless :( It's a great sign that they are eating. To be honest baby pigs who are eating fresh food, especially cucumber probably wont drink a great deal. A bowl and a bottle is a great idea but make sure the bowl is shallow with just a little water - have heard of babies drowning in deep full bowls :(

This has brought tears to my eyes. Thank heaven you found them and they are now somewhere warm and comfortable with someone who cares xx>>>

Good luck with them

Just went and had a peek outside of our door, just to be on the safe side - thankfully nothing... rolleyes

ive checked all behind my bins on the front and ive walked down my road checking everyones doorstep and the entry thankfully nothing.

thank goodness these babies found their way to you! have you got an old jumper, fleece or towels that you could put in with them? honestly, anything is better than nothing. give them peelings tomorrow, hay if you can get it. when you put them up your jumper, you did just the right thing, i know because my piggies always come up my jumper at cuddle time and fall asleep. your warmth was just what they needed. best of luck xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

well done

I'm suprised their still alive you did the write thing
if it was me id keep them and just try and find out who it was8...
