Just finished cleaning out piggies, oh what a nightmare. Smidge's hutch was fine, its alot bigger, but its so much more open, and i lift up the roof and just scope the woodshavings away. Easy peasy. Takes me 5 minutes, so its nice and quick. Georgy's hutch is different, its narrow, has then awakard corners that hay gets stuck in and poo and wee mixed into a sticky substance in the corner, and its so hard to get rid of. The hutch is smaller (3ft temporary hutch) has no lift up roof and lets very little light in and is very musky in there. It takes me 30 mintues to clean! :o whoever designed that hutch must of thought i dont mind getting piggy's left overs all over my hands and clothes, because thats what happens! i cant wait until i have enough money to buy georgy a hutch like smidges!

an idea - this is what we do, layer the bottom with a bin liner (any bag will do I guess), then a layer of newspaper with hay and shredded paper on top.

When it's time for the cleanout, it all gets rolled up and chucked! Sometimes hutch needs a sweep, but that's it! :)

I'm going to do that next time, it sounds so much more easier!

ohhh never thought of that, and theyve never dug it up to chew it?

but i might just try it next time,a friend of mine brought some perspex around ( which I'm gonna use as fronts rather than grids) and i was thinking of lining the bottom with that but now youve mentioned that, awesome idea!

its a great idea but as said before dont they chew it?

Occasionally they get under the paper and have a little chew of the paper, but rarely they get to the chewing of the plastic

I do the same Kelly but don't use the bag on the bottom & once rolled & chucked all i have to do is give it a sweep  :)

my rabbit cage is huge and we just line it with newspaper and ifi clean it every few days it all just rolls up... but with the guineas its a diff storey :) ill have to try the bin liner thing too :P

layer the bottom with a bin liner
just be careful guys, my piggys rip up their paper and make a mess. Plastic bags can be very bad if chewed, they can lead to instestinal blockage and bloat and so are potentially lethal. My top tip would be really think layer of newspaper with edges, folded like a box to make a 2 inch border all around. I also put a piece pf newpaper on top so they will chew that and not the stuff linking their cage. :)

That is sometimes what we do, but again, have had no problems for years :)

I always line the bottom of my cages with paper & roll it. Wouldn't dare try with a bin liner because my lot are just too destructive to be trusted!.....as I am typing I can hear Sylvie ripping away at her newspaper ::)

I line ours with A4 paper (nicked from OH's printer!) ;) then lots of newspaper on top, then lots of hay... it all rolls up really easily when I clean them out.

my runs and some are long and hugh get thick newspaper then hay on top, roll it up and bin it when dirty the girls I do half at a time as its so big

Yep, I'm another one of the 'newspaper and hay' brigade and I also spread the paper so that it goes a couple of inches up the sides to minimise the amount of hay and poo that creeps over the edges. Then when I clean the cage I roll it up and take it out. (Unfortunately this system does sometimes fail when one of them has eaten right through the paper and left a gaping hole ;D )
I'm sure if I put a bin bag at the bottom, Sammy at least would eat it - he's the worst of the lot for eating things he shouldn't. ::)

;D ;D ;D ;D I know exactly where you are coming from!

A bit of a silly question, but what do you do if you just want to spot clean or get rid of poos daily and have newspaper and hay as bedding as described in this thread? Do you end up changing all the hay every day?

I use newspaper under vet bed and its great :) I use a rechargeable vac to depoop twice a day ::) The vet bed is replaced twice a week with a clean piece ;)
