Hi all :)

My guinea pig has had one runny nostril now for a few months. It goes from clear discharge to sometimes a bit more creamy, and he seems to snort/sneeze quite a bit too. I took him to the vets a few weeks ago to get him checked out, and the vet said his chest sounded clear and he was otherwise healthy, and gave him a course of antibiotics incase it was the early onset of a URI.

Although we completed the course, he still has a runny nostril, and I have also now noticed his nostril bleeding twice. Not a huge lot, but there is a small amount of dry blood around the nostril. I am going to get another appointment at the vet tomorrow to get him checked out again. I have just taken a photo and it looks rather bad at the moment.

In anyone's experience, what may this be? I would like to have a few potential ideas before heading to the vets incase they just prescribe antibiotics again for a URI, because I just have a feeling that this isn't what is wrong with him. Other than this he is completely healthy, eats lots, moves around easily, he is just over 5 years old.

Thankyou!

So sorry to hear about your boy. My girl has similar, slightly runny nose, sneezing a lot, very shuffle, sometimes worse sometimes better over 4 months. Two courses of antibiotics didn’t make a huge amount of difference, I was even steaMing her!. I had her xrayed and her head was enlarged, turns out she has heart disease. She is on frusol and vetmedin and so far all good, nose has cleared up and she is much much happier. Maybe worth getting the vet to check the heart?

Poor thing. Great you will be going back to the vets soon. Maybe something is stuck up his nostril? A grass seed? I’ve no experience with this it’s just an idea as you have treated for a URI already? Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along soon.

Thankyou both. I am hoping it is something as simple as having a seed or hay stuck up his nose! I will bear a heart issue in mind at the appointment though.

Hi!

Any nose bleed needs to be vet checked. They are most commonly caused by something stuck in the nose but occasionally they can have a more sinister cause like a polyp, a tooth growing into the wrong direction or a brain tumour etc.
