A piggy came to me on Friday in a right state. She has been treated for mites and her skin is clear of mites now. She was prescribed Baytril by their vet and the woman gave her the 3mls of Baytril in 1 dose mallethead Her tummy has been fine and she has gained 120grammes in weight in 6 days!

The problem is that she has a sore and open wounds all over her, the worst are round her neck, ALL ROUND her neck and it is just getting worse. She sqeels all the time and she won't let me touch them AT ALL now. She will take Metacam but she won't let me touch the sores to put anything on them.

Do you have any advice on what I can do to help her, it is awful, thanks in advance xx

Poor little pig. Are they getting worse because she is chewing them? Can you towel wrap her to apply cream?

Poor sow - that is so sad and sounds a bit like one I have here right now.

If they aren't infected do you need to put anything on them at all? I think they will heal up faster in the air if they aren't smothered?

Personally I would give her the metacam for the pain and as long as she's not making them worse i'd leave them get better (again as long as they aren't infected)

is they hair missing from around the neck?

If so its poss ringworm as ive had guineas which started with ringworm around the neck it was really sore looking bleeding..

if its just open sores IE as in a bite or sim could you get some hibiscrub and bathe the affected area twice a day every day until its healed..

if it looks infected then she will need baytril again along with probiotics, dont trust everyones word as its poss she never had baytril and the person bringing her into you didnt know what to say so just said she had 3ml..

could you post a picture please ?x

camrosa cream is great for open sores After becklam and lisajazz recommended me and it is so you even has a fungal thing in it which helps to clear it..

if it was ringworm you can use canerstan 1% twice a day to the affected area for around 3-4 wks until the hair has regrown...

when i had a baby in a few weeks ago with ringworm i found the microneem didnt clear it as it was to bad,but i did clear it in a guinea with a mild case of it.

you could bath in nizoral shampoo too once or twice a week for 3 wks this is a human shampoo for fungal issues xx

this is if its fungal!

if not ive had very possitive results with hibiscrb in open sore areas !
could do with a picture though!

with you saying its getting worse it sounds like its poss not mites, does sound like fungal issues to me..

who has treated her for mites you or them?

if them then i would treat again just incase they didnt..I you did, then go down the fungal root!

but as i said really need a picture!

As Lisa says if they are not infected they should heal quite quickly without having to stress her out by applying anything.

I've found that some will scratch no matter what when they are healing - the scabs must irritate - on those piggies I sacrifice a sock and make a little jacket - elastic cuff around the neck, toe bit overt he bottom and cut a slot for the front legs and a take the end off for the toilet bits. They aren't too amused at wearing it but a few days not being able to open the wounds again can make all the difference.

If I can get anything onto their skin I used a mix of baby oil to keep the scabs soft so they don't crack and bleed, tea tree oil to help stop fungal/bacteria and lavender oil to help healing. 20ml baby oil, 5 drops tea tree, 5 drops lavender. Twice a day if they'll let me. Just apply a drop or two.

if its fungal would putting a sock/jacket on her, make the fungal worse ?

i can understand about it stopping the scratching!

but we really need a picture as we all maybe way off with out seeing it first..:)

You're quite right we need a pic, I've found that the less they can scratch the faster they heal up - as long as the fungal is getting treated (and you can take the sock off while you can supervise so they can't rake at their scabs) it seems to work.

I'll post some pics shortly when I have to pick her up to give her the Metacam.

I know she had the baytril as I have the empty and my volunteer is the vet nurse who gave this woman my number at work. She has looked up her records for me to see what she was treated for so I know she had 3 lots of ivermectin and the baytril.

I gave her ivormec when she arrived here too, just to be sure, but the wounds are getting worse as she is just scratching them more and more.

I can't towel wrap as the wounds are wear you would wrap and she just sreams, it is a horrible sound. I'm sure it isn't ringworm as there are little bits or hair regrowth in amongst the fresh bits. There is just so many wounds that my bathroom smells like the metallic smell of blood, it's awful.

I'll try and get some pics xx

I've had an idea - at the start of one of peter gurneys books he talks about something similar and he used an over the counter anasthetic spray to stop the pain?

Maybe you could find that (I have no idea what it is) you can spray her so it will be easier and while it's working do what you have to to the wounds

If it's numb she's unlikely to scratch it right?

This one looks good (she's not nursing is she?)

That ingredient is great for numbing - but again not sure if suitable and if you can get something at any pharmacy.

Poor girl. I can't offer any very useful advice, just wanted to say that when Flumpet had open sores from scratching when she had mites the vet gave her a steroid injection to ease the itching (as well as ivectermin injection). It did seem to have an effect straight away.
Hope she starts feeling better soon. :)

OMG, when I went to give her the Metacam her wounds are oozing now! Here are some pics but they are very graphic and quite stomach churning I have to say. They don't smell but she is clearly suffering and I have am getting a vets appointment for this afternoon. Just horriffic so don't look if you are sensitive:

Poor girl!

That's antibiotics and steroids for sure and get them to inject her metacam so it's working straight away and is stronger.

She must be in agony :(

Oh jeez, poor sow, I didn't realise it was that nasty. Cases like this make you realise that working in rescue is among the best medical experience you can get. :(

As it's that severe and I haven't dealt with a pig that bad, I don't want to say what to do or not to do, I'm sorry I'm of no use this time. What time is the vet seeing her?

xx

OMG! That poor piggy, I know it looks dreadful but you'll be amazed how quickly they can heal once getting the right treatment - A steroid inj will help with the itching and inflammation so is an important point to make to the vet if they don't suggest it. Others have used Zithromax (sp) antibiotic for bad infections and found it very good, not all vets are happy to use it though so you may have to ask for it. For fungal skin I use Canestan 1%.

No wonder she screams, poor love.

this is how fast ringworm changes especially under the neck i found this with the boar i had in last year with it, she has quiet thick hair too which the boar that i had last year had too i found it affected the thicker haired one than the shorter haired ones.

the shorter haired ones had hairloss on the face but the thicker haired one had if under the neck and nothing on the face i used the surolan cream twice a day for around 3 wks x

whatever the original underlying cause of the wounds, i would suggest it is now also bacterially infected, so antibiotics would be helpful (plus whatever is needed to treat the original problem).
Have you spoken to Hels - it reminds me of Buddy and Paloma.

I m going to get dressed now and drop her off at the vets so I don't have to wait for an app then they will ring me.

Thanks for the advice and will let you know what they say x

you can also use canesten HC which has steroid's added to it, buy canesten 1% and hydrocortisone from the pharmacy mix it together it gives you caesten HC apply twice a day or even 3 times a day until the redness is going if your not going to use the surolan xx

Poor little piggle. Hope she gets on ok at the vets and gets better soon.
