3 weeka ago i took my guinea pig Haven to the vets having problems with her slowly loosing weight (aprox 75grams to date...now total now), excessive thirst and urination. I took a urine sample to the vets and he said h
she had kidney failure after a examination
He also noted one of her kidneys was tiny.
Since then Haven is still eating/drinking and not lost any more weight! I took her for a check up and this time it was a diffrent vet i saw (same surgery but was a late appointment). She said she was pleased Haven had lost no more weigh and to keep doing what i am doing while she ia so alert etc. She did note how small Haven is...but also said you can tell she ia is supposed to be small (just not this small).
We discussed her lump and the vet said its a tumor...and where haven is so small it wasnt worth putting her under GA etc. I also talked with her about a possinle blood test and she said that they give a small amount of anesthetic to take blood with small animals and where Haven is small and poorly ( although not acting it) that she may have a bad reaction and not come round properly...but she said it was my choice and if that is what i want she will do it-but says she is pretty sure it is kidney failure etc.
What i am asking is....is this the correct way to do things? They are a very caring vt and always been very good and willing to listen...but what i ask is is all this the "norm" ? Is it worth in a few weeks in half term and will be off all week- making a trip 30miles (somthing i have no problem doing but woild nees to be half term as i work week days etc) to an exotic vet by train to get a second opinion? Or is my vet doing and aaying everything "right" ? Any advice appriciated. Thanks. :-)

Sorry for all the typos and spell mistakes...i was so tired last night and was typing on my phone and was quickly typing to get out what i wanted to say that i didnt proof read...hope you can understand what i am trying to say. thank you in advance...

Hi, I am sorry Haven is unwell. Is she an elderly piggy? Kidney disease is not uncommon in older pigs and sadley is not something that can be cured (in any species). I have had piggies with kidney failure in the past, they have had the classic symptoms of wieght loss (despite a good appetite) and excessive increased thirst. They have been diagnosed by urine tests and physical exam.
Blood tests are possible but will most likely only confirm what your vet has said already and as an anaesthetic will put a strain on her kidneys it is not something i would go for but i understand you wanting to do everything you can.
What ever you decide make sure she get plenty of veg and friut to help with her fluid intake, also I read somewhere that pears are good for kidneys and have always found that they remain a favourite with kidney pigs even when they go off other veg like carrots. I hope this is of some help.

Thanks so much for your reply. It means allot. Haven is only 3- will be 4 in December. Haven has a very good appetite and drinks loads, i check her wee and poos each day. Yes i give her lots of veg and some fruit. Thanks, i bought some pears the other day, so will give her some for breakfast :)
I really appreciate your reply. Thank you!
