before i try to bond merlin with bob and munchie later in the week, i wanted peoples opinions on bonding 3 boars together. i know a few people have 3 boars together, but did any of you have 2 then add a third?

i just want to make sure its a good idea before i go ahead, normally i wouldnt even consider trying to get bob to get on with a boar other than munchie, as he is so dominant, but the way he has been with merlin so far, sniffing through the bars etc and not going mad has made me think it could work with merlin

the other option is to keep merlin as a lone boar until july until i move into another house and have a stable job, and get him a friend then, but I'm not sure about that idea, as he seems to love the company of other piggies, and spends a lot of the day watching bob and munchie play

do you think its worth a go? they have a big enough cage, but i would buy a few more c+c grids to make a second level, so they have even more space. i just dont want to leave merlin on his own for so long when he seems to like my other 2

I let my 3 boars out to run about together for a few hours a day and they get along fine. Brandy isn't the best guinea pig in the world for getting along with other piggies but all 3 are adults and he doesn't seem to act agressive atall. I wouldn't try having them all living together. You could try http://www.barmy4boars.co.uk/ for some tips on 3 together. There is people who have 3 live together fine.

only thing is on the barmy 4 boars website it ays not to keep boars in more than pairs :-\

yeah you go with your instincts and whatever you think is right O0 I did and i had 6 or more boars living together at once :smitten: I only separated them into pairs cause i gave them more space :D Ive got 3 boars of all ages bonded together right now ;)

thanks ILA i would really love if they could like together, and i really want merlin to have company as he seems to love watching bob and munchie. I'm hoping now bob has gotten older and merlin is very young that it would work out.

Oh well good luck and I'm sure theyll be fine :smitten:

but it also some where on the barmy for boars site says trios can work! I have 3 brothers together and they get along ok and I have let basil run around with Ronald and Donald and he is fine but I would never home him with them so it can work keep up the good work and let us know how you are getting on O0

found it :) am worried hough as it says that 2 f them could pair up and leave the other out, or it could cause seperation of all 3 pigs, and i really dont want to ruin bob and munchies bond as they have grown up together and get on so well :-\

he may be happy to just watch them playing, my lone boar will not live with another at the moment, he is happy that way, he is also quite content to have a run around with Ronald and Donald at cleaning time ( I wouldnt take them to on they are massive lol) so maybe he would be happy to just have floor time with them under your watchful eye and then look at pairing him when you can.

ive been letting them "meet" through cage bars, but not letting them get too close as merlin is recovering from a bad fungal skin problem, so he wont be introduced properly until he is all clear.

bob is a massive piggy too he is 1350g and 18 months old, munchie is 1200g and 15 months old, merlin is only 600g and is only about 11 weeks old

if i paired them i was going to do it over several days, and introduce them free range in the spare room of our house or in the run each day to see how they get on before putting them in a cage together

I have done this with no probs! Sadly they had to be seperated to go to new homes, but I know itcan be done - depends a lot on the temp of the boars, as soon as you intro them, you will know what the score is LOL

Just have a towel at the ready if you need to break anything up, dont put your hand/s in to stop it! :o :o

Good luck hun! Reeeaaally hope it works out okay for you!x

Why not try floor time with all 3, for 30 minutes to start with, then tomorrow an hour and see if there is any aggression.
You will get the odd rumble and the odd bum swaying.
I have 2 pairs of males and they play together nicely but until I we move, they will have to stay in 2 cages due to space.

right i let bob and merlin sniff each other through the bars last night, up close, and bob wasnt too bad. merlin however came out of his shell and started rumbling and wouldnt stop wheeking! so I'm not sure which way its going to turn out once theyre introduced. I'm beginning to think merlin might be too dominant.

i think at the weekend instead of letting them free range together, ill put them in the run with a partition to start off with, that might be a better idea to get merlin used to being so close to other pigs. he's spent his entire life on his own so far so I'm hoping its just that hes not used to other pigs

OOOOOo I reeeally hope its going to be okay...I know neutering and gf isnt an option as you dont want bob and munchie to fall out :-\

Just stay positive and baby steps....

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking leaving the divider there could be frustrating for merlin, so maybe thats why hes sounding annoyed? Fingers crossed they wont be little !

I think merli will be hitting puberty full pelt soon, so its going be be an awkward time...

Do you have a plan of action if it doesnt work out? :-\

i do have a back up plan. the back up plan is to keep merlin as a loan boar and extend my c+c so he is at least near bob and munchie for company as he still seems to like watching them play.

then i would have to wait until july, when i leave uni and get a job that isnt at sainsburys ::) and then find him a friend, male or female would depend on my housing arrangements. he wouldnt be a lone boar permanantly as i wouldnt want to do that to him as he is a very sociable piggy

to be honest I'm suprised bob wasnt rumbling, he goes crazy whenever he gets the slightest smell of my housemates 2 boars but hes nowhere near as bad with merlin. the main issue now is whether merlin will try and push bob too far or not :-\

do you think i should keep letting them sniff each other through the bars so they can get used to each others smells, or wait until i introduce them at the weekend?

I woul;d keep them wheer they are....I know from exp when you seperate boars and try and put them back together, its like reintroducing them all over again...

I wouldnt keep him as a lone boar...that doesnt seem fasir, but you have a lot of time before you have to make that decision...

Like you say, if merlins never been with piggies before (or at least for a few weeks) it will take him a while to remember what its like!

I know what I would do, but thats probably isnt right, so I dont want to tell you....thenit all go wrong (if you know what I mean) xx0

i would never put merlin as a lone boar, as i agree piggies are so much happier with friends, and merlin is so sociable, but until july i dont really have a big enough income for 4 pigs, well i do but not if there was an emergency. plus I'm running out of space in my bedroom xx0 as soon as i moved house and got a job in july i would be looking at rescues for a friend for him!

when i found merlin, he had been in the petshop since 6 weeks old (my mum saw him there every week) and the entire time he had been at the shop he was stuck on his own. and he was 10 weeks-ish when i got him

i think ill keep him seperate for now as planned until the weekend, then see how it goes and take it slowly. as bob is mellowing out in his old age you never know i suppose how it could turn out until you try ;D

out of interest what would you do? i dont mind, its good to hear what other people would do thats why i asked for opinions first :)
