Hi all my beautiful but Dexter had dental work last Thursday his third time. Unfortunately our normal vet was off sick so he had someone else. It didn't go to plan. Normally within a day he's back to eating normally again not this time. After continuing weightless and worrying I managed to find simon in Northampton who was just amazing. He rehydrated my piggie and 're did his teeth that hadn't been done properly the first time! ☹ he also said Dexter had thrush so we've been given intrafungol. He still isn't eating by himself I'm syringe feeding him every 4 hours and also syringing him water. He doesn't look as bad as he was. But I was wondering how long it takes for the thrush medicine to start working? I keep offering thin strips of veg but he's not interested. Or nibbled a tiny bit before turning away. He's only 2. I'm so worried for him. I know he's got the best fighting chance after seeing simon I'm just worried that after being unable to eat by himself that he may not ever be able to again! Any advice guys? Oh and happy new year xx

It can take a few days with the itrafungol to get on top of the thrush.
Continue to syringe feed and contact the clinic again tomorrow.

My past piggy, Bunny, had oral thrush on top of having bladder stones and then cystitis. Simon told us what caused her oral thrush was that because she was taking antibiotics for a long time. She was prescribe itrafungol to be taken 2 weeks at least. We never did get rid of it though (I think we caught it at a very bad stage already) and was one of the reasons we couldn't fix her other problems and we decided to put her to sleep. She wasn't able to eat and swallow the food we were giving her despite feeding her round the clock during the 3rd week of taking the itrafungol.

Keep syringe feeding your piggy. If he accepts and swallows the food, then that's a good sign. Make sure to have a follow up appointment with Simon to check if there is any improvement with him. My piggy didn't improve after 2 weeks, but that's also because hers was already so bad (Simon said at that time that her mouth was full of thrush and ulcers) and she had other issues.

Ah I'm so sorry to hear this. It breaks your heart. They are so much a part of the family.Yes Dexter has been on Baytril for a different infection which has cleared up. There were no signs of ulcers etc just the thrush on his tongue. I will keep with it he has check up on the 16th jan. Only started on the intrafungol yesterday x

Chunk has had oral thrush from syringe feeding and his mouth was sore. The Itrafungol seemed to work in a few days, keep trying to feed your little one if you can and hopefully the meds will sort the thrush out 🤞🏻 Hope your Dexter is feeling better soon, Simon will know how to fix him up 😊

Sadly we had to put my beloved Dexter to sleep. He grew weaker and wasn't able to walk or support himself. RIP little man will forever miss you.

So very sorry to hear this.
You did everything you could for him and gave him the last gift of love we can ever give our beloved piggies.
It’s hard on you though so look after yourself and take time to grieve
