I noticed Oscar dragging both back legs on Thursday out in the run.
He has been to the vet, xray performed....no fractures seen.
Hes home in a adapted cage.To see if he improves. He is eating and drinking....though I'm giving him top up feeds.hes on pain relief.Hes bright and interacting with his ladies,he weights 1.5.kgs,but his ladies and 800grams,i dont know how hes got so big.

I'm using vet bed,he is urinating and passing feaces .i will see how he goes, but if he does not improve i will need to PTS.As i dont want him to suffer.
He is 3 years old,a placid pig,and usually popcorns ,even for a new pile of hay.

Hi

See whether some osteocare (calcium) helps if it is a case of one-off 'overnight back leg paralysis. It is depends on what is causing the back leg paralysis but unless you are unlucky to deal with a progressive issue, movement, if not always quite fully, will gradually come back.

You can find more information in this guide here, which also includes simple care and hygiene measures you can take as well as enrichment ideas.

Thankyou weibke, ive already given osteocare, but hestill has full paralysis. Thanks for the useful guides. He is on the lawn for a short time with his ladies. They are rallying around him.

Please be a bit more patient, try to stay positive and give him some more days. Osteocare is not a miracle cure that instantly reverses back leg paralysis.

Guinea pigs can distinguish between illness and disability. They will support their mates with a disability - as you are currently witnessing. Piggies that have lost all or part of their mobility usually retain their zest of life. They are the biggest exception to the 'quality of life' rule. ;)

Just give the situation a bit more time to develop and see in which direction things are heading. I full appreciate that it has come as a huge shock to you.

Thanks weibke,it is rather shocking to see.Hes is propelling himself along with his legs splayed out.i will need to be more patient !

HUGS

Sudden back leg paralysis always comes as a nasty shock; especially if it is the first time and you do not deal well with shocks in the first place. Your boy still has got his zest for life and he has the support of his group. :)

Wishing Oscar all the best and as full a recovery as possible. Just that it won't be anywhere near as quick as it has come on, unfortunately.

Sending loads of healing vibes to Oscar xx I do understand each piggy has differing medical issues, but Cavy Corner had a piggy whose back legs were paralysed but she had a fulfilling life, you may remember Merpig?
Sending positive thoughts to you too. x

Thanks Munchmonster.i do not remember Merpig.😭.i will see how Oscar goes.Though i do not like to leave a piggie paralized ,without any improvement.I will have to decide if progression is not seen in a month.:(
