Hello,
I have a 6+ year old guinea pig who has a small tumor on its stomach. He chewed into it and its been bleeding. However, there has been no change in eating habits, poop, or activity level. We dont want to go to a vet because they will either tell us "he is old" or want to do stitches which we choose not to do because of his age.

Right now, we are just looking for something to place on the wound so he wont chew on it as it heals. We have tried bandages but they keep falling off. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Putting on stitches is a very simply procedure which would not be expensive nor dangerous.
There are also special plasters which I had on some surgical wounds after the removal of the stitches. Those plasters are very sticky and have the same function of the stitches (I had to remove the stitches for an infection). The problem is that a pet is not a human and when he feels something strange on the skin the instinct of licking the zone is strong...
Have you tried any bandage? there are adhesive bandages which are also elastic. You should do some attempt before using a stuffed animal. I upload some images taken on the net, maybe they will help you

If he has a tumor that is bothering him to the point that he is chewing it and causing it to bleed I think he needs to see a vet, at least then you will know for sure what the options are and be able to make a more informed decision as to what to do.and a vet can supply you with suitable bandaging if that is what is needed

Guinea pigs can appear to be carrying on normally while hiding their pain, that said I would suggest that chewing at a tumor is evidence that it is causing pain. Has he lost any weight?
 
I agree, a vet is certainly needed. His age shouldn't put you off finding the right treatment for him. It is quite possible that they can make him comfortable for you. If he's chewing it and its bleeding he'll at least need pain meds and antibiotics.

Thank you to all for your responses! Called every vet in town on Friday and they either couldnt see him or they dont deal with guinea pigs. Even my own vet didnt have time until next week and wouldnt offer what to do in the mean time. Frustrating! Therefore, gave my pig (Tippy Toe) a salt bath and bought a raft / vest thing to wear to keep from letting him bother the wound. Still wish I had some type of ointment so that if he tried to bite at it, the smell / taste would discourage him. However, can say after 2 days he seems to be doing better. He is also still acting completely normal so think its an external tumor and not internal. Thank you again for all suggestions.

When is your appointment with the vet? My concern is that if the skin integrity has been breached there is a risk of infection. In the U.K. A vet would have a duty to see a piggy in this condition. Good luck getting an appointment.
 
I can suggest a natural procedure which can prevent the infection and even helping the wound to heal. It might work better than a medicine and for sure it will not interfere with what the vet will do.
You have only to wash the wound with water boiled with a lot of plantain leaves (they have a strong antibiotic property), plus salt (which disenfects the skin and help the healing process). You need to do that many times a day. Some months ago I hade a little (stupid) surgery at my leg for removing a mole and after one week, despite the care, I had an infection. I was prescribed different disinfectant products, then also an antibiotic ointment, then an antibiotic in tablets, but nothing seemed to work and the heal was open again. Then the doctors decided to remove the stitches and my leg was red, bloated, painful and there was blood. At that point a young doctor told me to get rid of all the medicines and to start washing the leg 7-8 times a day with water and salt (and a friend of mine erborist suggested to me to boil the plantain leaves into that water). My leg recovered in only few days...
Plantain is safe for piggies.

Thank you for the suggestion! I have been bathing Tippy Toe in salt water a couple of times a day and it seems to be helping, however I never heard of using Plantain.. I just Googled it and see the benefits! Who knew! I'm going to research where to buy it right now. Thanks again!
 
Look, this is plantain; do a search around you, you will find it for sure also in town

Hello again! Its been a few days since I written because I was busy finding the plantain leaves and trying them out. They seemed to be working ok but then today the wound reopened. I finally took my pig to a new vet (quite a distance away) but they were able to check him out and prescribed 2 medications- SMZ TMP antibiotic and Metacam for pain. He was given both 7 hours ago and seems really mellow now. Should I be worried or is this just a side effect of the medication?
 
I wonder if he has an infection and that is what is causing him to be mellow. The fact that the wound reopened suggests that it wasn't healing.

Both of the drugs you mention are quite common and don't usually cause issues, unless the doses are very wrong.
