well, i didnt realise there was another part to this forum for other pets, so il let you all in on a secret, i adore my aquatics :)) i drive my family and friends nuts with my fish keeping!

i have 2 tanks right now, a 6ft long goldfish tank, and a 4ft long tropical community, both very well established, the goldfish tank for a couple of years and the tropical tank for around a year.

this is my 4ft tank, it measures 48" long, 20" wide, and is 28" tall. it houses mollies, guppies, platys, neon tetra, yoyo loaches, cory catfish,a female pearl gourami, a red tail black shark and a male bristlenose plec. some live plants some fake, and lots of driftwood for the plec. am considering selling this set-up.

this is my 6ft goldfish tank, measures 72" long, 24" wide and 24" tall. i have all fancy goldfish except a single shubunkin goldfish which was a rescue from a far too small 2ft tank. the largest of my fancy goldfish in here was last measured at just over 9.5" long. sadly i recently lost my 8" black moor goldfish who you can see in this picture :0 the tank is slightly over stocked with 10 fancy goldfish and the shubunkin (must stop taking in little fish from tiny tanks!), but i run massive filtration via a fluval fx5 and 3 internal filters too, and i carry out weekly partial water changes of 30-50% to keep nitrates low.

i am very experienced with goldfish care, and know a fair amount about tropicals too. i am on a mission in life :)) to help people realise just how large they grow and how much hard work it is to keep these big beautiful fish and help them to thrive x)

this is my 1st and 2nd largest goldfish, a big orange and white oranda. 8.5" when i last measured, and the top one was 9.5" the last time i measured. the smaller guy at the bottom is approx 5" long but he looks tiny in this pic,he is mostly tail and fins due to early stunting in a small tank before i got him.

i would have loved to get goldfish but my tank is too small, they look great, love the pics :)

Your goldfish are beautiful! I wish more people cared for them correctly, they can get so big and people just don't realise!
We have 3 tanks and a pond at my house... 2 tropical tanks, a goldfish tank and goldfish in our pond. Fish are brilliant aren't they? :)

i adore my goldfish over any other fish ive ever owned. they have wonderful characters. they are all still growing, yes even the biggest ones :)) most people dont realise the true size potential of these beasties which is unfortunately why so many live miserable short lives in bowls or small tanks. theres a lot of 'my goldfish is 2 years old WOW its old isnt it' when in fact they can live to be 40 years old. i think the oldest ive heard about was 47 when it died.

hopefully, just as it changed with the guinea pigs and rabbits in the same hutch idea, people will come to realise just how cruel it is to house these creatures in inadequate set-ups leading them to a shortened life span. :)) well thats my aim....1 keeper at a time....spread the word....goldfish are hard work and expensive to keep properly ;)

ahhhh, my obsessive fish keeping strikes again :red:)) fish are awesome :)

wow! I've been recently finding out how much more there is to keeping goldfish!
Unfortunately when I got my 5 fishies I was told 'they would grow to the size of the tank'. I have found out, that infact they do not! They keep growing! I'm on my 3rd tank which is still not big enough! (2foot by 1). Considering running two tanks and splitting the fish up - just got to convince my 'rents that its a good idea. I'm still working on the pond idea.....

When I was little the house we lived in had a pond with a big goldfish in it. I called him Ian and he was already in the pond when my parents bought the house. The people they bought it off said that he was already in the pond when they had bought the house. If it wasn't for him I would never have thought they could be so big or live so long.

they will only keep growing if you can keep up with the partial water changes each week, or sooner if nitrates climb too quickly. if you cant keep up with the water changes they will start to stunt in growth. this causes deformities which is what kills the fish eventually. their organs begin to fail. cant be a nice way to go. have you considered rehoming the fish you have? are they fancies or commons? good luck with convincing your parents :) fingers crossed for your pond :(|) well done for upgrading so far.

Oh, those pictures are wonderful. I'd love to keep fish but right now my money goes on my pigs and possibly when I get a house with my mom will be able to get a lovely tank like that :D How much did it cost you? xx

the tank themselves cost my £80 for the smaller one and £75 for the larger one, the larger one is on a homemade wooden stand, and the smaller one is on a shop bought steel stand, the cabinets and hoods we made ourselves using b&q kitchen cupboard doors from their cherry wood range :)) all held on using magnets so we can have full access to the filters etc under the tanks, the fronts/sides just pop on and off in sections. under the hoods we use prismatic sheets as condensation trays, these are supposed to be used to cover light fittings in shops, but only cost a few pounds each from an electrical wholesaler, they diffuse the light evenly over the tank and are easy to cut to size, they come in 2ftx2ft and 2ft x4ft sizes. all of my filters are 2nd hand, have never bought a new one yet, and dont plan to :)) total costs of each tank not including fish/gravel/plants/wood is around £200 and £300 ish.

You had a black moor! i had one too! He lived two years before sadly dying :( I loved him dearly he was such a cheeky fish!:)) (sorry I'm a bit dotty over black moors and fantail fish! lol)

You have amazing tanks, they are beautiful i would love to get back into fish keeping again once we've settled into our new place and have a lovely big tank again! Wonderful photos :) x

this was annie, my black moor, at the last measurement she was just shy of 8".

DSC08065.jpg

she was euthanized by me a week or so ago, as she had terrible swim bladder issues and in the end couldnt right herself, get off of the surface or feed properly. she was wasting away and hurting her eyes as she drifted around the tank. was a sad day as she was a present from my husband for our wedding anniversary (hence the name annie) i know, a bit odd as presents go, but i was made up with her x)

Annie was a beautiful girl, strange that she had swim bladder problems king julius, (my black moor) had recurring swim bladder from being a young fish so we took him to the vet in the end to be euthanized, i do have photos (somewhere) of Julius will try to find them for you :) I think that Annie is a lovely wedding anniversary present :) xx

a lot of fancy goldfish have swim bladder problems as it sometimes doesnt grow right in their deformed bodies. sad really. i feed mine cooked shelled peas at least twice a week to push any trapped gases out of their gut to reduce the chances of bouyancy problems, but it doesnt always work that way. annie was a large 5" fish when we got her, so we dont know her previous care either.

love them name of your moor :)) shame he isnt still with you :(

my husband has said no to any more black moors, they seem more sickly than the orandas and fantails. think they are more inbred to create the big eyes and black colouring. such a shame.

Ahhh i had no problems with my red cap orandas, magic and mushroom (lol!) it just seemed to be poor Julius. I'll remember the shelled peas when i get fantails again, hehe! I'm certainly going to do more research into them when i get them again, my fantails were bought for me as a present so they were all a bit of a surprise!

Awww thats awful isnt it? :( I love black moors they are so beautiful, its just horrible when you lose your fishies i always become so attached to my fish!

i make sure i stick with sinking pellets, i use saki hikari and get great results from them in colour and growth. twice a week i feed cooked shelled peas, as many as they will eat lol, they do love them so they stuff their little faces :)) they also get the mushy insides of sweetcorn, orange segments opened up and they eat the little bits inside them, cooked broccoli, live pond weed in their tank, and once in a while they will have frozen bloodworm as a treat.

if you need any info when you do get around to keeping them again, il be happy to help :)
