Hello everyone and sorry for the delay in updating this, it's been a very busy few weeks. I'm sad to say that we had to have the little fella put to sleep a couple of weeks ago
My mum had spent many hours syringe feeding and despite looking like he was on the mend he simply wasn't taking any food for himself. He did seem to improve at one stage and we really thought that the worst was over and that he was going to start eating again, as he was trying, but it didn't last long. He had lost so much weight. Constant monitering of his weight proved that despite being syringe fed many times a day he just wasn't putting weight back on. We took him back to the vets for a follow up check up. The vet we saw was the same one that had done the dental and after being examined it was clear that the teeth had already grown back over the tongue, arching over and meeting in the middle forming a bridge that almost pinned the tongue down! We couldn't believe that the teeth had grown back so quickly. We weighed up the options of having the dental done again, but were frankly relieved when the vet said that she didn't think it would be fair on him to keep him going, he did look in a sorry state. It was clear that the kindest thing to do was have him put to sleep. The real shame of it is that prior to him being poorly he was quite shy, but after being nursed by my mum he had really come out of himself and become quite a little character. Needless to say, it was upsetting, especially for my mum. So there you go..........you win some, you lose some. I like to think that we did our best. As a family we have always loved all our animals and are very sentimental about them. As difficult as it is there comes a time when you have to make that decision based on what is really best and fair for the little things. Thankyou to everyone who followed/advised on this thread, it's always nice to know that there are other people out there who care and are willing to share their knowledge. Very best wishes. David & family.
