One of our 3 guinea pigs, Snowball, is about 2 and a half years old. Recently we noticed blood in her urine. We have been to the vet a couple times and finally they decided to do a test on her urine and found she had some sort of infection. They gave her an antibiotic, "Baytril 136 MG #5 in 75 ML". After a couple of weeks on the medication it seems her pee has been fine. Yet now today she has had very mushy and messy poop with blood in it. Are there any comments or recommendations on this issue?

Please and thanks to any help.

Are you sure it is her poop that has blood...or that she has weed on her poop (verycommon)and that has blood...

Whatever the above ...it is important you take her back to the vets PRONTO.....she needs a different antibioitic to combat any urinary infection (septrin is kinder on the gut than batyril and better for UTI's)...and probioitics to sort out her gut flora.

Also she needs an X ray to check she has no urethral or bladder (or kidney) stones (infection/baytril is commonly the diagnosis...but a cavy savy vet will do the X ray too to check for stones which is the other majot cuase of blood in the urine....)

Messy poops is indicative of a possible new infection in the guts in reaction to the baytril...withdraw all veggies..feed on hay, Vit c and pellets.

Weigh daily to check for weight loss as she could be getting dehydrated.

Feed a probioitic (Fibreplex in your acse as she has squishy poos)...this can be ordered off the internet

If she is in pain then give metacam (0.2ml/kg of dog strength) otherwise she will stop eating.

If she starts to lose weight...syringe or spoon feed with either Oxbow critical care of Supreme Science Recovery...or mashed up pellets....up to 120ml per 24hour day
