A very sad thing happened this week. My aby sow Akka died after having possible ovarian cysts treated with Chorulon by a vet.

The vet wasn't sure if she had cysts or not because she couldn't see them with ultrasound. I brought her to vet due to weight loss. She said that Chorulon shouldn't harm the piggy even if she didn't have cysts. But now I am wondering about the amount of medication injected. She had 3 ml Chorulon. I don't know anything about dosage of this medication but the amount seemed huge to me.

It could well be just a coincidence, Akka might have had some other condition that made her stop eating and moving altogether a few days after the treatment. She died a day later.
What do you think about the 3 ml dose of Chorulon?

Chorulon is spelled wrong in the title but I dont know how to fix it...:hmm: sorry!

I'm really sorry.

I have only had one pig treated with Chorulon and she had 3 injections that I think were a couple of weeks apart, I am unsure on the dose she was given though. Hopefully another member will know but I can find out if not. It is possible that whatever was going on which caused her to need the injections is what killed her sadly.

Edit, doing a quick search on here, there was a pig that had 0.2ml each injection and they had 2 injections a fortnight apart but then needed another 2 a few months later. I know that when my pig had them, there were 2 possible doses that could have been used but it was a few years ago now so I can't quite remember.

Thank you helen for your reply :)
I went to see vet today with another piggy, Hupakko (her eye is a bit wounded and infected) and asked about the dose. The other vet had been consulted by this vet in Akka's case and she told there are two strengths of Chorulon. The one given to Akka was milder and had to be given a big dose. They didn't have that time the stronger one that could be given in a smaller dose. So no mistake was done there, and I was very relieved to hear that!

That's good to know, at least it can stop you wondering what if.

I am thinking that she had some kind of cyst that wasn't obvious on the xray or scan that grew in such a way that it affected her movement and other organs. I saw a similar thing in the clinic that I volunteered at.

Yeah, it is good to know at least that!
It could have been the cyst that erupted or she also could have had a heart condition or a tumor. The vet saw some mass in the uterus with the ultrasound that day but could not be sure.
Akka's weight loss was very gradual; it was going on for almost a year. She ate with good appetite but wouldn't gain any weight. She had some breathing symptoms too , that's why I think it might have been the heart. But of course it's too late to know :( . I just miss her so much.

Poor girl, sounds like she had a lot going on bless her. Hope you're ok.
