Hi,

has anyone got an information/experience on ovarian cysts in guinea pigs?

One of my sows is on the heavy side and looks bigger than the others, I got her out today to trim her nails and she felt alot heavier than usual and as I turned her round I could feel two quite big balls inside her tummy, she has always been roundish but these felt quite hard and she wasn't happy with me gently touching her:(

She looks healthy in herself, she is def not pregnant and she is eating and drinking well other than this

I am thinking it may be cysts and am going to book an appointment with a cavy vet, but I just wondered if someone could give me advice if it is that how much I am looking at long term for treatment just to prepare me for the shock!:{

Thanks!

Sounds like the symptoms that my sow had, you could get your fingers around them, they were like two plums. I had my girl spayed, which cured the problem, but I have since learned that you can have hormone injections to treat them, don't know whether it completely gets rid of them though, they can return after so long and you treat when necessary. The spay cost me around £60, not sure what the injections cost.

The only piggie I had who had cysts unfortunately had other problems as well and didn't make it. She did have 1 hormone injection but we never got to find out if it worked or not but the vet said that she may have needed follow up injections. He did say that in his experience he found them very successful and it's obviously much less invasive than a spey. I *think* we paid £65 at the time, but that included an ultrasound, the injection, consultation fee and I think a few other meds as like I said she had several issues at the time. I think the injections were around the £40 mark if I remember correctly, but this is going back a few years
