My poor Big Mamma wasnt wating on Monday so took her the vets. Heu done an xray and she was a bit bloated so hey whwre treating her for that.

Tuesday she started eating again which i was pleased aboit so thoight everythig was OK.

Wednesday i thtoight i would weigh her (normaly i do weekly but with her unwell i done a random weigh in) and she had lost more weight. Rushed her he vets and her bkood sugars where low. The vet done a second opinion of the scan and she has ovarian cysts...

She went in for the operation an hour ago. The vet nurse has taken her to look after her tonight and I'm calling up at 8:30 to see how she is getting on...

I hope she has a speedy recovery...
Hope Big Mamma gets better soon :(

Tow of mine had ovarian cysts removed and were fine - am sure your piggy will be too.

I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed!
Here are our post-op care tips: Tips For Post-operative Care

So Big Mamma is home today YEY. Seems to have recovered quite well. She is eating lettuce, grass, hay voluntary.Eating her own poop and being nosy around her cage.

The vert advised me to separate her whilst she is recovering so i have put a divider in the cage.

I have come out of the vets today with a load of medicine to give her at various times of the day.
Metoclopramide 0.7ml 3 times a day
Metacan 0.54ml 1 time a day
Zantac 0.4ml 2 times a day
Baytril 1ml 1 time a day

So i'll be busy over the next few days but hopefully work it.

In addition to the above i will syringe feed so i know she is getting something substantial in her and will sprinkle a bit of pro-biotic in there as well.

Lets hope she has a speedy recovery!

If she is eating on her own, I would just offer syringe feed as a top-up and only if her weight is not stable. Weigh her daily before dinner when tummy and bladder should hopefully be empty for comparable results.

You can split both the metacam (which I would recommend as the painkiller doesn't last 24 hours due to the fast metabolism) and the baytril. If she struggles with taking the baytril, mix it with the same amount of ribena or fruit juice.

Handle the separation as things go. Once Big Mamma is eating normally and can keep her weight stable on her own, she is fit to go with her companion. I had my frail Cariad with dominant husboar as paw-holding companion all the time (including at the vets); he was actually very kind with her. As soon as she was stable, she went back with her group on day 2-3 as that was stressing her out a lot less.

Quick update:- Big mamma is happy to eat dandelion leaf, hay and grass on her own

She is not eating her normal pellets so today i have intervened with syringe feeding she had 5ml at 11am and 6ml at 1pm.

She also ate some broccoli on her own but nit much

Big Mamma is still munching on her poops

Those who have had their sow neutered when did you seen an improvement? to them eating their normal pellet food?

Good to hear Big Mamma is eating veg, hay and poops.

My Violet was back to her normal eating (pellets, hay and veg) by day 2 post op. In the meantime I kept her topped up with a bit of mashed up pellets syringe fed to her as well.

I'd hold back on the broccoli until she gets back into her normal eating again - it is rather gassy and if she's not got her normal rhythm with her digestive system it could cause her a bit of a build up of gas. Can you tempt her with herbs to keep her munching? The Baytril itself can put them off their food a bit.

This is now her 2nd day and she looked better yesterday.

I just thought she would be a little bit more mobile and eating her pellets more. Mind you she wasn't eating much before her spay.

I will remove the broccoli from her cage and monitor her more closely her pops are a bit soft but she is eating some of them.

thanks everyone

She seems in a bit of pain when she goes for a wee or poop.

Its sounds like an inquisitive noise but i know it isn't any suggestions?

Sounds all normal to me - once you get to day 4 /5 things should be much better - Bumble had a big op on wednesday and his food and poops are now back to normal today

Day 3 post operation.
Big Mamma is eating grass and hay all by herself.
My my she is pooing a lot and eating it which is good.
She has gone off the veggies she is really only eating cucumber.
I'm still syringe feeding her. yesyerday she had 25ml off me wasnt too concerned a she is eating hay and grass.
Big mamma hasn't lost anymore weigjt which is good still at 1.22kg (she was 1.34kg).
I popped her cage mate (who is seprate at the moment) in her run today and hey got in well the other one was locking her eye cute.
Back in work tomorrow and I'm worried not being here she may go down hill :(

Is her cage mate male or female - just if cage mate is a boar and she comes into season he might start mounting her,so might be better to keep her separate for a few days more because of the stitches - if cage mate a sow then no worries - as her weight is holding well I wouldn't worry about her - she will get back to normal very soon and will probably eat more when back with her cagemates.

Her cage mate is a sow. They have never really got on Big Mamma has always been the dominant one.
I think I'm just a worried mummy x

I may leave it another day to put jem.back together.

Thanks for posting this thread @Fizzbomb290 I think another of our sow's has ovarian cysts, I don't think they can be treated with hormone injections like Coco's were as she seems a bit big and I'm not sure that hormone injections work on the bigger cysts? So I think I'm going to opt for having her spayed so she doesn't have anymore problems, your thread/posts have made me feel a bit better about having the op done, I tend to worry a fair bit.

I'm glad Big Mamma is recovering well :)

@keerie74 Glad it has come in some use for you. I'm a terrible worrier.

I just cant wait for the baytril to finish because of her appitite. I was due to go on holiday on friday but I dont think i will go because of my poor piggie.

My parents were going to give them veggies but i cant expect them to syrine feed as its taken me forever to get a technique.

She is eating but just not the right stuff at the moment.

We've got 4 guinea's with health problems at the moment.

Oh no sorry to hear that i thought it was only me with one piggie ill after the other.

I hope they get better soon...

Big M is going to the vets for a post op check up tomorrow.

She is habng some trouble when needing a pee she is making a squeaking sound.

I'll let you all know how she gets on tomorrow x

Ok, I hope she's ok :)

No, I have had a run of bad luck with the guinea's, we lost one to what we think was ovarian cysts (the rescue didn't take her to the vets and when we adopted her and took her the vet didn't take it seriously) we lost another to bladder stones, again poor vets, then one got IC, another had got bladder and kidney stones, his cage mate has mammary tumours which I'm hoping to have removed, Cesaro has a nasty parasite and has lost so much weight, he's being hand fed/watered, waiting for the lab results to see if anything is found in his stools (antibiotics didn't seem to work) and also Nattie with possible ovarian cysts...

Day 4 post op

Big Mamma went for her post op today and the wond is healing fine. Still maintaining her weight.

Still not eating pellets and all her veg but is lovong grass, corriander and hay.the vet said as long as her guts are moving and eating hay she sould be getting all the nutrients she needs. I'm still toppong her up with recovery food though as a precaution.

I have decided to put her back with her cage mate today as the have had a divide since friday.

Big Mamma launched at Jupiter but it soon diffised asfter i screamed didnt know she could move so fast lol..

Going to be in the same room as them for a while and hopefully i can trust them on their own.

I'm worried as i have read once they have been seprate they sometimes dont like being back together again

But for now they are eating grass together as best friends x

Day 5 post op

Big mamma is still maintaining her weight. Still eating her poops, grass and hay. She is still only on 20ml of recovery plus a day.

Some progress today though with her eating. Went for some veg took a couple mouthfuls of recovery plus wahoo :yahoo:

My mum and dad gave her some musli today and she ate it YEY. I would prefer her to eat her pellets though:hmm:

Not too sure of when to stop syringe feesong her. As I'm only fover 20ml a day i presume she would be OK after this week?

Metaclopromide has finished today so i will keep an eye on her toilet habits.

She still isn't running around her cage she is hiding on her hiddy hut. But i suppose she is fed up of me grabbing her to syringe fed her every dew hours.
