someone i went to school with works in my local pets at home and i was talking to her whilst looking at the fish and i noticed one didnt look right and was swimming funny so i pointed it out and she said that they arn't allowed to remove them untill they are dead

I do think its down to individual stores to be honest. BUT as you say P@H should be making sure all stores are up to standard having certain rules for some stores and not enforcing them in others should be sorted out, my local P@H had a fish suffering from swim bladder in on his own being treated and he was getting better, but another one i've been to i've had to tell them fish are dead in their tanks :-\

Some Pet shops don't actually remove dad fish either, they let the other fish feed on them. I saw this in a fish shop in Liverpool and was so horrified I had to tell the staff, they said it was a batural thing to do but I couldn't back it up with facts.

I saw enough on the American video from Rainbow exotics to say no more pet shop pigs. Although I have 3 of my boars which came from pet shops I dread to think where they came from , I just hope it wasn't a bad place!

Some stores are better than others, St Helens and Aintree are good. I've never seen or had a problem with them, but it's got to be across the board. :)

It doesn't matter about it being individual stores to be honest. As a company that are trying to be reputable I think it's a disgrace that this happens in any of their stores. The fact is it's not even the smaller things that have been neglected here, it's the very basics of licencing conditions. I don't think that any chances are warranted here - there is no excuse for not removing dead fish (which can cause ammonia and nitrates to build up in the water), not feeding animals properly and selling animals before they are quarantined.

I agree really. but its not just P@H, round here if people had to buy from pet shops i'd tell them to go to P@H because the alternatives are a disgrace. all of the independent pet shops i've ever seen are much worse, rabbits in with pigs in tiny cages, loads of hamsters fighting in one cage, rabbits with no water or food, dead koi carp in with live ones. one near Louise even had a dead hamster in the cage which had died as a result of the cage being unsuitable i think :( where are the inspectors for these places?! i've reported all of them but they're all still open :-\

That's right Emma I forgot about that, it was the one where I got Sunshienf rom and we thought he was just playing but I I got closer I could see he had somehow broken his neck on the metal bottle holder thats hold the water bottles in place. How it did it I don't know but the staff didn't care.

I've reported the dreaded fishery one god knows how many times but nothing gets done because it's about making money, the government need to do something. I won't go in Pet shops anymore because my heart rules my head. I wouldn't insult anyone who does it's all about choice I guess but like me when I first started being a Cavy slave I didn't know about rescues at all. How many prosepective owners out there know about guinea pig rescues?

Not many at all. i never go in independent pet shops, ive come out of them crying before and VERY angry. i'll go in P@H for food etc because my locals are good and i dont just have pigs to think about, my cat will only eat one food that you can only get from pet shops and i'd rather go to P@H than any others :-\ as for more animals, I'm not getting any more full stop! so i dont need to think about where I'm getting the next one! x

Hehe Emma I say that now I've got 8! :D yeah Monty would only eat Pet shop stuff. We don't have a P@H local to us we had a Pets Smart in Hunts Cross but thats has well gone now. It's more convinent for me to shop online, the last thing I want is to drag Caitlin around Pet shops and her saying Aww sooo cute, soo buiful! Want it! :Dxxx

I've visited the store they're talking about in the article...when I visited it seemed no worse than any of the others, but I don't like any of the ones I've visited. (no, I don't shop there either).

:'(

Doesn't surprise me - the staff in Heeley store are absolutely dire, I hope they all get fired for this.

Our closest p@h i have to say are very good, the guinea's are in big pens and they always look clean and well cared for. On the other hand the p@h i pass on the way to work doesnt seem half as good, i actually had to go and tell one of the staff that a hamster had no water, its bottle was lying empty on the bottom of the cage.... apparently the hamster had just arrived and the staff member was just on his way to do it! well if he'd seen it already why was it not done....? grrr :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

Some info I have found out....Apparently they were granted their licenses before the story was even published ;D

Now I remember why I don't read newspapers ::) ;D
