In my quest to find a cavy savvy vet should I need one I called the Pets at Home vet in Stirling. I said I was looking for vet who specialises in exotics, she asked what I had. I said guinea pigs and she chuckled and said they are not exotics. I told her that yes they are included under exotics. She said they deal with a lot of guinea pigs and know what to give them. I felt like saying that doesn't mean they know how best to treat them.

It's definitely a brilliant idea to find a good piggy Vet before you actually need one, so well done you! I only wish I'd had your foresight when I first got my piggies, it would've saved me so much heartache and might well have saved the life of my pig.

And I couldn't agree more about not assuming that a Vet is cavy-savvy, just because they see a fair few pigs. Try to get a recommendation on here if you can.

I found one who specialises in exotics not far away from us. Although there is nothing wrong with my piggies I have made an appointment for Friday at 4.40pm. Want to have them registered there and for an examination just for me to know that everything is ok.

Guinea pigs are classed as exotics so (again!) Pets at Home don't know what they're talking about. It's worth checking with the actual vet how experienced they are with guinea pigs as some exotics vets seem to specialise in reptiles or birds.
A cavy savvy vet is not necessarily an exotics specialist, a vet that a rescue uses is usally a good one in my experience as they see a lot of piggies and a variety of health problems.

Hi,
I've never been to that vet in Falkirk but I have heard VERY VERY good things about him from people with tortoises - he was one of the very few recommended vets (for tortoises) in Scotland.
